Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah describes the nature of human beings when they are tested with both ease and hardship. When Allah bestows His favors upon a person—such as good health, wealth, security, or other blessings—that person often turns away from Allah, becoming arrogant and self-reliant. He distances himself from gratitude, obedience, and humility, as if he has no need for his Lord. His pride makes him shun the path of truth and righteousness, and he behaves as though these blessings came from his own effort alone, forgetting the true Giver.
However, when adversity strikes—such as illness, poverty, or any form of distress—the same person becomes intensely devoted to supplication. He calls upon Allah with a wide and abundant prayer, repeatedly and earnestly, seeking relief from his hardship. In times of trouble, he remembers his Lord and turns to Him with humility, but in times of ease, he forgets Him and turns away.
This verse highlights a painful reality of human nature: that many people only remember Allah in times of difficulty, but neglect Him in times of comfort. They know their Lord in hardship but deny Him in prosperity. They do not give thanks when blessed, nor do they show patience when tested.
A Call to Reflection and Betterment:
Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. How often do we find ourselves turning to Allah fervently when a crisis strikes, only to drift away when the crisis passes and life becomes comfortable again? Allah, in His infinite mercy, tests us with both ease and hardship to see which of us is truly grateful and patient.
The believer who is wise and conscious of Allah does not limit his connection with his Lord to moments of distress. Rather, he remains constant in gratitude during times of ease, and patient and hopeful during times of trial. He understands that both blessings and hardships come from Allah, and both require a response: gratitude for blessings, and patience with trust in Allah's wisdom during trials.
Let us strive to be among those who remember Allah in prosperity and adversity alike. Let our tongues be moist with His praise in times of ease, so that when we call upon Him in times of need, our supplication is not the desperate cry of a stranger, but the intimate plea of a beloved servant. For Allah loves those who are grateful, and He is near to those who call upon Him with sincerity—whether in ease or in hardship.
