Word Meanings:
- Salafan (سَلَفًا): Predecessors or those who have gone before; a group that serves as a precedent for those who come after them.
- Mathalan (مَثَلًا): An example, lesson, or warning; a striking case that people cite and learn from.
Explanation of the Verse:
After recounting the fate of Pharaoh and his people—how they were drowned in the sea for their tyranny and rejection of the truth—Allah states that He made them a precedent and a lesson for all who came after them. They were not merely a people punished and forgotten; rather, their story was preserved so that every generation that followed would know what happens to those who persist in arrogance, disbelief, and oppression.
As a precedent, they were the first to receive such a punishment for their specific crimes, and their fate became a model of what awaits anyone who walks in their footsteps. As a lesson, their story is told and retold, so that people may reflect and avoid the path that leads to destruction. The Qur'an itself preserves their account as a living reminder, and history continues to bear witness to the truth of what befell them.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: Allah does not punish a people and then leave their story to fade into oblivion. Rather, He preserves it as a beacon of warning for all humanity. The fate of Pharaoh and his army is not ancient history—it is a living sign, displayed before our eyes in every age. When you see the remains of their civilization or hear their story, know that the same Divine justice that overtook them is ever-present and unchanging.
This verse invites you to be among those who learn from the past rather than repeat its mistakes. The Qur'an does not merely narrate stories for entertainment; it presents them as guiding lights. So, let the example of Pharaoh be a shield for your heart—protecting you from arrogance, from rejecting the truth, and from harming others. For the One who drowned the tyrants in the sea is the same Lord who watches over you today, and His mercy is open to all who turn back to Him in sincerity. Embrace this guidance, and you will find yourself among those whom Allah describes as successful in this life and the next.
