Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kam (كَمْ): How many — used here to indicate a large, numerous quantity.
- Arsalna (أَرْسَلْنَا): We sent — referring to Allah's sending of prophets with divine guidance.
- Nabiyy (نَبِيّ): Prophet — a person chosen by Allah to receive revelation and convey His message.
- Al-Awwalin (الْأَوَّلِينَ): The former peoples — the nations and communities that existed before the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse serves as a profound consolation from Allah to His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Allah reminds him that He sent numerous prophets throughout history — to the earlier nations, to the ancient civilizations, to peoples long gone. These prophets came with the same core message: the oneness of Allah, righteousness, and the call to worship Him alone.
Yet, as the following verses will clarify, those nations did not receive their prophets with gratitude and acceptance. Instead, they mocked them, rejected their call, and persisted in their disbelief. Despite their power, wealth, and strength — which often surpassed that of the Quraysh — Allah destroyed them for their arrogance and stubbornness. Their fate became a lesson for all of humanity.
The wisdom here is twofold: First, it comforts the Prophet (peace be upon him), showing him that his experience of rejection and ridicule was not unique — it was the path of all prophets before him. Second, it serves as a stern warning to the disbelievers of Makkah: if they continue in their mockery and rejection, they too will face the same end as those who came before them.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder the greatness of Allah's mercy and justice. He did not leave humanity without guidance — He sent prophets to every nation, in every era, speaking the language of their people, addressing their specific circumstances. This is a testament to Allah's love for His creation and His desire for them to succeed.
When you face opposition for your faith, remember that you are walking the same path as the prophets. Their patience and perseverance in the face of mockery is a shining example for us all. The temporary trials of this world are nothing compared to the eternal reward that awaits those who remain steadfast.
And for those who reject the truth, let this verse be a gentle yet firm reminder: history repeats itself for those who do not learn from it. The nations that mocked their prophets are no more — their palaces crumbled, their power faded, and their names became mere footnotes in history. But the message of truth remains, shining brightly for those who seek it.
Let us be among those who honor the prophets, accept their message, and live by it — for that is the path to success in this life and the Hereafter.
