Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Ahzāb (الأحزاب): The factions or parties—here referring to the various Christian sects that split over the nature of Prophet Jesus (ʿĪsā), peace be upon him.
- Fawail (فَوَيْلٌ): Woe—a word of severe threat and destruction, indicating ruin and intense suffering.
- Ẓalamū (ظَلَمُوا): Those who wronged—meaning they wronged themselves through false beliefs and attributing to Allah what is not befitting of Him.
- Yawmin Alīm (يَوْمٍ أَلِيم): A painful day—referring to the Day of Resurrection, a day of agonizing torment for the disbelievers.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) was raised to the heavens, the people who claimed to follow him fell into deep disagreement and split into warring factions. These groups—the Christians—differed among themselves regarding his true nature. Some said he was the son of God, others claimed he was God Himself, and still others asserted that he and his mother were two gods alongside Allah. Only a few held fast to the truth: that Jesus was a servant of Allah and His Messenger, a human being created by Allah’s command, who called people to worship Allah alone.
This division was not imposed upon them from outside; rather, it arose from within their own ranks, born of their own deviation and stubbornness. They abandoned the clear message brought by Jesus and invented beliefs that contradicted the very core of his teaching—pure monotheism.
Therefore, the verse declares a stern warning: "Woe to those who wronged"— those who ascribed divinity to a human prophet, who described Jesus in ways that Allah never described him, and who thereby wronged themselves and led others astray. For them is a painful punishment on the Day of Judgment, a day when no excuse will avail them, and no intercessor will benefit them unless Allah grants permission.
A Call to Reflection and Guidance:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every seeker of truth. It reminds us that deviating from the straight path—the path of pure monotheism—leads only to confusion, division, and ultimately ruin. Allah, in His infinite mercy, sent prophets and messengers to guide humanity, and He preserved the final message in the Qur’an, free from any distortion or alteration.
How beautiful is the Qur’anic description of Jesus! He is honored as a noble prophet, a word from Allah, and a spirit from Him—yet he remains a servant of Allah, not a partner in divinity. Islam calls us to love and respect Jesus, peace be upon him, while worshiping only the One who created him.
So let us hold firmly to the rope of Allah, and let us not be like those who divided their religion into sects. The Qur’an invites us to a simple, pure, and unshakable truth: "Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent." (Al-Ikhlāṣ 112:1-4)
This is the path of salvation, the path of the prophets from Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them all). May Allah guide us to it, keep us steadfast upon it, and save us from the torment of the painful Day.
