Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses those who dispute and differ—particularly the factions who held conflicting views about Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him)—and also the disbelievers of Quraysh who were engrossed in their worldly affairs. Allah asks them, in a manner that exposes their heedlessness: "What are these people waiting for, if not the Hour?" They are not awaiting any good; rather, they are waiting for the Day of Resurrection to come upon them all of a sudden, without any prior warning or sign that would alert them to its approach. They are so deeply occupied with the distractions of this worldly life—its pleasures, disputes, and falsehoods—that they are completely unaware of its imminent arrival. They neither perceive its nearness nor prepare for it. If it comes upon them while they persist in their disbelief and stubbornness, their fate will be a painful and severe punishment. This is a stern warning that the Hour is inevitable and will arrive at a time when they least expect it, leaving them in utter shock and regret.
Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a profound wake-up call for every soul. It reminds us that the greatest certainty in life is the coming of the Hour, yet it is the very thing we neglect the most. We plan for our careers, our homes, and our futures, but how many of us truly prepare for the Day when we will stand before our Lord? The Hour will not announce itself; it will come suddenly, while people are busy trading, laughing, or even arguing—just as it is described in the Qur’an. Do not let the distractions of this world make you forget your ultimate return. Turn to Allah today, seek His forgiveness, and live a life of righteousness, so that when that sudden moment arrives, you are among those who are ready, with hearts full of faith and deeds that weigh heavily in your favor. The opportunity is now, before the Hour catches you unaware.
