Key Words and Phrases:

  • Al-Akhillā’ (الْأَخِلَّاءُ): Close, intimate friends; those bound by deep companionship and mutual affection.
  • Yawma’idhin (يَوْمَئِذٍ): On that Day — the Day of Resurrection.
  • ʿAdūw (عَدُوٌّ): Enemy; one who harbors hostility and seeks harm.
  • Al-Muttaqīn (الْمُتَّقِينَ): The God-fearing; those who are mindful of Allah by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, the nature of worldly friendships will be completely overturned. Those who were close companions in this life — bonded together in sin, disbelief, or mutual indulgence in what displeases Allah — will find that their love and loyalty have turned into bitter enmity. Each will blame the other for leading them astray, and they will disown one another in utter regret and despair. Their former affection will dissolve into curses and accusations, as they realize that their friendship was built on a foundation that brings nothing but ruin in the Hereafter.

However, there is one exception that shines with hope and mercy: the friendships of the righteous — those who loved one another for the sake of Allah, who supported each other in obedience, and who united upon piety and good deeds. Their bond is not broken by death or the trials of the Hereafter; rather, it is purified and elevated. Their love, rooted in faith, becomes a source of comfort and joy on that terrifying Day. They will intercede for one another, rejoice in each other’s company, and enter Paradise together as true friends, where their companionship is everlasting and free from any shadow of discord.

This verse serves as a profound reminder for every soul: examine the basis of your friendships. If your bonds are built on worldly gain, sin, or the neglect of Allah, they will become a source of regret and hostility when you need support the most. But if your love is for Allah — sincere, pure, and guided by His pleasure — then that love is a treasure that will accompany you beyond the grave and into eternal bliss. Choose your companions wisely, for on that Day, only the friends of righteousness will remain friends, while all else turns to enmity. Let this inspire you to seek companions who remind you of Allah, who help you grow in faith, and who will stand by you not only in this world but in the everlasting life to come.

📜 Verse 65-69 — Az-Zukhruf

But the denominations from among them differed [and separated], so woe to those who have wronged from the punishment of a painful Day.
Are they waiting except for the Hour to come upon them suddenly while they perceive not?
Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous
[To whom Allah will say], "O My servants, no fear will there be concerning you this Day, nor will you grieve,
[You] who believed in Our verses and were Muslims.
