Key Words and Phrases:

  • Al-Mujrimun (المجرمون): The criminals — specifically referring to those who committed the gravest crime of disbelief (kufr) and persisted in sin and transgression against Allah's commands.
  • Khalidun (خالدون): Abiding forever, remaining eternally without end.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most High, declares with absolute certainty and emphasis — using the particle "inna" (إِنَّ) which conveys a solemn oath and affirmation — that the criminals, those who disbelieved in Allah, rejected His messengers, and persisted in wrongdoing, will be in the punishment of Hellfire, remaining therein forever and ever. This is not a temporary stay, nor a brief visit; it is an eternal, unending abode. Their punishment is perpetual, with no respite, no relief, and no hope of escape. They will not taste coolness, nor any drink of comfort, and the severity of the torment will never be lightened for them even for a single moment.

The term "criminals" here encompasses all those who earned sin through their disbelief — those who knew the truth yet turned away from it, those who worshipped other than Allah, and those who followed their desires over divine guidance. Their crime was not merely a mistake; it was a deliberate choice to reject the truth after it had become clear to them, and to persist in arrogance and rebellion against their Creator.

This eternal punishment is a direct consequence of their own actions. Allah does not wrong anyone in the slightest. Rather, it is they who wronged themselves by choosing disbelief over faith, by preferring the fleeting pleasures of this world over the eternal bliss of the Hereafter, and by turning away from the messengers who were sent to guide them. The justice of Allah is perfect, and His punishment is precisely what their crimes deserve.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, let this verse serve as a profound reminder of the reality that awaits those who turn away from their Lord. How often do we become absorbed in the distractions of this worldly life, forgetting that every soul shall taste death and that the Hereafter is the true, everlasting life?

The criminals mentioned in this verse are not distant, abstract figures — they are a warning to every one of us. The path of sin and disobedience, if not repented from, leads to this very end. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, has left the door of repentance wide open for us in this life. He calls us to turn back to Him before death overtakes us, promising to forgive all sins for those who sincerely repent.

Do not let your heart become hardened by sin, and do not despair of Allah's mercy — for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. The very fact that you are reading these words is an opportunity from Allah to reflect, to change, and to draw closer to Him. Embrace the truth of Islam, hold fast to the Qur'an and the Sunnah of His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and strive to live a life that pleases your Lord. For the reward of Paradise is far greater than any sacrifice you make in this world, and the punishment of Hellfire is far more severe than any pleasure you might chase in disobedience.

May Allah protect us all from being among the criminals, and may He grant us the success to be among the righteous who will dwell in the gardens of eternal bliss. Ameen.

📜 Verse 72-76 — Az-Zukhruf

And that is Paradise which you are made to inherit for what you used to do.
For you therein is much fruit from which you will eat.
Indeed, the criminals will be in the punishment of Hell, abiding eternally.
It will not be allowed to subside for them, and they, therein, are in despair.
And We did not wrong them, but it was they who were the wrongdoers.
