Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- لَا يُفَتَّرُ عَنْهُمْ — The punishment will not be lightened or reduced for them in any way.
- مُبْلِسُونَ — They are in a state of utter despair, having lost all hope of any relief or escape.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse paints a vivid and sobering picture of the state of the disbelievers in Hellfire. After describing how the criminals and wrongdoers will be seized and cast into the torment of Jahannam, Allah tells us that their punishment is perpetual and unrelenting — it will never be lightened, not even for a single moment. There is no respite, no pause, and no reduction in the severity of what they endure.
The second part of the verse describes their psychological and emotional state: "and they are therein in utter despair." The Arabic word *mublisūn* conveys a profound sense of hopelessness — they have lost every glimmer of hope for mercy, relief, or escape. They are completely broken, knowing that their fate is sealed and that there is no way out. This despair is itself a form of torment, compounding the physical suffering they experience.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the reality of accountability. The punishment is not arbitrary or unjust — it is the direct consequence of a life spent in arrogance, disbelief, and rejection of the truth. Yet even in this dire warning, there is mercy for the living: we are being told this now, while we still have the chance to turn back to Allah, to seek His forgiveness, and to strive for His pleasure.
The beauty of Islam is that Allah never leaves us without guidance and never closes the door of repentance until death approaches. This verse is not meant to frighten us into despair, but to awaken us from heedlessness. It calls us to reflect: if we do not want to be among those who are in utter despair, let us be among those who strive in hope — hope in Allah’s mercy, hope in His reward, and hope in His eternal Paradise. Every prayer we make, every good deed we do, and every sin we abandon is a step away from that despair and a step toward eternal bliss.
Let this verse be a motivation to increase in gratitude, to hold firmly to the rope of Allah, and to live each day with the awareness that our choices here shape our eternity. May Allah protect us all from the state of despair and grant us the joy of His mercy and the sweetness of His forgiveness.
