Key Words and Phrases:
- "Wa ma zalamnahum" (وَمَا ظَلَمْنَاهُمْ): "And We did not wrong them" — meaning, We did not treat them unjustly.
- "Al-Zalimin" (الظَّالِمِينَ): "The wrongdoers" — those who commit injustice against themselves through their own choices.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah Almighty absolves Himself of any injustice toward the wicked, declaring: *"And We did not wrong them, but they were the wrongdoers."*
This statement comes as a decisive response to any notion that Allah could be unjust in His punishment. The people of Hell, having earned their fate through persistent disbelief and sin, cannot claim that their punishment is undeserved. Allah does not punish anyone without cause, nor does He place affliction upon those who do not merit it. Rather, His justice is absolute and perfect.
The reality is that these wrongdoers wronged themselves — and no one else. How did they do so? They placed their worship and devotion in beings and things that have no right to it, while rejecting the One True God who alone deserves all worship. They committed the ultimate injustice by associating partners with Allah and denying His messengers, even when the truth was made clear to them. They chose disbelief over faith, arrogance over humility, and transgression over obedience — and in doing so, they harmed only their own souls.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every human being: Allah never wrongs anyone, in this life or the next. Every trial, every consequence, and every punishment is a direct result of our own actions. When we sin, we are not harming Allah — He is far above any harm. We are only harming ourselves. When we disobey, we are not diminishing His kingdom — we are only diminishing our own standing with Him.
How beautiful is the justice of Allah! He does not punish out of vengeance or cruelty, but out of perfect wisdom. He has warned us, guided us, and given us countless chances to return to Him. If we still choose the path of wrongdoing, then the blame falls entirely upon us.
Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your soul. If you find yourself facing difficulties or consequences in life, do not rush to blame others or even Allah. Instead, look inward — examine your own deeds, your own choices, your own relationship with your Creator. The One who created you is the Most Merciful and the Most Just. He does not desire your destruction; He desires your success. But that success requires you to turn away from wrongdoing and embrace righteousness.
The path is open before you. Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is never closed. Do not be among those who wrong themselves — be among those who recognize their Lord, worship Him alone, and secure for themselves a place of eternal bliss. For truly, the one who wrongs himself in this world will regret it in the next, while the one who treats his soul with justice through faith and good deeds will find peace and happiness forever.
