Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shakk (شَكّ): Doubt, uncertainty, or lack of certainty about the truth.
- Yal'abūn (يَلْعَبُونَ): They play, jest, or amuse themselves—meaning they treat serious matters lightly and mockingly.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse comes as a decisive response to those who reject the truth after clear signs have been shown to them. Allah says: "But they are in doubt, playing." The meaning is that these polytheists are not certain about the truth of the Qur'an or the coming of the Hour—they are not people of conviction. Rather, they are immersed in doubt and uncertainty, and instead of seeking clarity, they turn away and busy themselves with jest and mockery. They treat the warnings of the Prophet ﷺ as a game, laughing at what deserves the utmost seriousness.
The verse exposes their psychological state: they are not people who have examined the evidence and rejected it out of knowledge, but rather people who are lost in confusion, and because they cannot refute the truth, they resort to ridicule and playfulness as a defense mechanism. This is the way of those who are overwhelmed by the truth—they mock what they cannot comprehend.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this profound truth: the Qur'an is not a book to be taken lightly. It is the word of Allah, a guidance for humanity, and a decisive criterion between right and wrong. Those who approach it with sincerity and an open heart will find in it light, peace, and answers to the deepest questions of existence. But those who approach it with arrogance or mockery will only increase in confusion and loss.
The verse invites you to ask yourself: Am I certain about the truth of the Qur'an, or am I among those who are in doubt, playing with the most serious matter of life? The door of certainty is open for everyone who seeks it with a pure heart. Allah says elsewhere: "And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?" (Al-Qamar: 17). The path to certainty is not closed—it is illuminated by the light of the Qur'an, and whoever walks it with sincerity will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter.
Do not let doubt or jest deprive you of the greatest treasure: faith in Allah and certainty in His promise. The Hour is real, the resurrection is real, and the meeting with your Lord is real. Take the Qur'an seriously, and it will take you by the hand to eternal success.
