Translation — Tafsir
Meanings of Key Words:
- أُولُو الْعَزْمِ (Ulul-Azm): The prophets of firm resolve and strong determination, namely Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), and Isa (Jesus) — peace be upon them all — with Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) being the fifth and the greatest of them.
- لَا تَسْتَعْجِل لَّهُمْ (Do not hasten for them): Do not be impatient for the punishment to befall your people.
- لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا (They did not stay): They did not remain or linger.
- بَلَاغٌ (A proclamation): A clear and sufficient conveyance of the message.
- الْفَاسِقُونَ (The defiantly disobedient): Those who depart from Allah's command and His obedience.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, endure the harm and rejection of your people with patience, just as the messengers of firm resolve — Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa — endured before you. They faced immense hardship and prolonged opposition, yet they never wavered in their mission. So follow their example and do not be hasty in asking for the punishment to befall your people, for it is certainly coming at the time Allah has decreed. When that Day arrives and they witness the very torment they were warned about, they will feel as though their entire stay in this world was no more than a single hour of a day — so brief will their worldly life seem in the face of the eternal reality of the Hereafter. The weight of that moment will make even the longest lives appear like a fleeting instant.
This Quran is a complete proclamation and a sufficient warning for all of humanity and jinn. It leaves no excuse for anyone. And when the punishment descends, none will be destroyed by it except those who defiantly turned away from Allah's command and persisted in their disobedience and disbelief. The believers who heeded the call will be saved, while the transgressors will face the consequences of their own choices.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson of hope and perseverance. Just as the greatest messengers endured trials with unwavering patience, we too are called to remain steadfast in our faith, knowing that Allah's promise is true and His help is near. The fleeting nature of this worldly life — described here as merely an hour of a day — reminds us not to become attached to temporary pleasures or discouraged by temporary hardships. Every difficulty you face for the sake of Allah is a step toward eternal success. And the verse ends with a beautiful reassurance: Allah's punishment only falls upon those who persist in transgression. So hold firm to the rope of Allah, for the believer is never destroyed — only the defiant ones are. Let this inspire you to be among the patient, for their reward is with their Lord, and His reward is the greatest of all.
