Waalal laahu innee munaz ziluhaa `alaikum faman yakfur ba`du minkum fa inneee u`azzibuhoo `azaabal laaa u`azzibuhooo ahadam minal `aalameen
📖 English Meaning
Allah said, "Indeed, I will sent it down to you, but whoever disbelieves afterwards from among you - then indeed will I punish him with a punishment by which I have not punished anyone among the worlds."

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Munazziluha" — I will send it down (the table spread with food).
  • "Yakfur" — disbelieves, denies, or rejects (the signs and truth).
  • "Al-'Alameen" — all the worlds/creations (in this context, the people of that time).

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, the Most High, responded to the supplication of His prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) and his disciples, who had asked for a table spread from heaven as a sign of reassurance and a proof of Allah's power. Allah said: "Indeed, I will send it down to you." This was a direct answer to their sincere request, demonstrating Allah's immense mercy and His readiness to respond to those who turn to Him with pure hearts.

However, this blessing came with a stern warning. Allah continued: "But whoever among you disbelieves after that" — meaning, after witnessing this miraculous sign with their own eyes and seeing the table descend from the sky — "then indeed, I will punish him with a punishment such that I have not punished anyone among the worlds." This is a severe and unique punishment, reserved specifically for those who witnessed this extraordinary miracle and still chose to reject the truth out of stubbornness and arrogance. Their crime was not ignorance, but deliberate denial after absolute clarity.

According to the authentic narrations, the table did indeed descend, and the disciples ate from it as a blessing from Allah. This event was a profound lesson: when Allah grants a request, He also holds people accountable for how they respond to His favors. The punishment mentioned here was not for those who believed and were grateful, but for those who would turn away after seeing the undeniable truth.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a powerful message for every believer. Allah's response to Jesus and his disciples shows us that when we call upon Allah with sincerity, He answers. But it also reminds us of the weight of responsibility that comes with knowledge and witnessing the truth. When Allah blesses us with guidance, clear signs, and the light of faith, we must cherish these gifts and remain steadfast. Let us not be among those who see the truth and then turn away. Instead, let us be grateful for every sign Allah places before us — the Qur'an, the beauty of creation, and the guidance of His messengers — and let our hearts remain firm in faith, so that we may be among those who receive His mercy and not His severe punishment. Indeed, Allah is Most Merciful to those who believe and obey, and His punishment is severe for those who reject Him after the truth has been made clear.

📜 Verse 113-117 — Al-Maidah

They said, "We wish to eat from it and let our hearts be reassured and know that you have been truthful to us and be among its witnesses."
Said Jesus, the son of Mary, "O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven to be for us a festival for the first of us and the last of us and a sign from You. And provide for us, and You are the best of providers."
Allah said, "Indeed, I will sent it down to you, but whoever disbelieves afterwards from among you - then indeed will I punish him with a punishment by which I have not punished anyone among the worlds."
And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen.
I said not to them except what You commanded me - to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.
