Word Meanings:

  • Tuʿadhdhibhum (You punish them): To inflict suffering or retribution upon them.
  • ʿIbāduk (Your servants): Those who are owned and subjugated by Allah, fully under His command and authority.
  • Taghfir (You forgive): To overlook sins and grant pardon out of mercy.
  • Al-ʿAzīz (The Almighty): The One whose power is absolute, invincible, and unmatched.
  • Al-Ḥakīm (The Wise): The One whose actions, decrees, and judgments are perfectly measured and free from any flaw.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is part of the supplication of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) to his Lord on the Day of Judgment, when Allah will ask him whether he told people to worship him and his mother instead of Allah. Jesus will disassociate himself from that and then turn to Allah with this humble and profound plea.

In this verse, Jesus acknowledges Allah’s absolute sovereignty and perfect justice. He says: "If You punish them, then they are Your servants" — meaning, O Lord, they are under Your complete control, and You have every right to deal with them as You will. Your punishment would be entirely just, for they are Your creation and Your servants, and no one can question or object to Your decree. There is no flaw in Your justice, and Your punishment is never excessive or unjust.

Then he says: "And if You forgive them, then You are the Almighty, the Wise." This means: If You choose to forgive those among them who believed in You sincerely and followed Your messengers, then this forgiveness is an act of Your might and wisdom. Your forgiveness does not diminish Your power; rather, it is a manifestation of Your majesty. You are the Almighty — nothing can prevent You from doing what You will — and You are the Wise — Your decisions are always perfectly suited to the situation, whether it be punishment or pardon.

The verse beautifully balances two divine attributes: justice and mercy. If Allah punishes, it is pure justice; if He forgives, it is pure grace and favor. Both are rooted in His perfection — His might ensures that His forgiveness is not a sign of weakness, and His wisdom ensures that His punishment is not an act of cruelty.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, ponder the depth of this supplication! Prophet Jesus, a noble messenger of Allah, presents his nation to his Lord with complete submission and trust. He does not insist on their innocence, nor does he despair of Allah’s mercy. Instead, he leaves the matter entirely to Allah’s wisdom and justice.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the relationship between the Creator and His creation. Allah is not forced to forgive anyone, nor is He compelled to punish anyone. He acts freely, yet always with perfect wisdom. As His servants, we should never feel that our sins are too great for His forgiveness, nor should we take His mercy for granted and persist in disobedience.

Let this verse inspire you to turn to Allah with humility, acknowledging His rights over you while hoping in His mercy. The door of repentance is open, and His forgiveness is greater than your sins. But remember — His mercy is for those who sincerely seek it, and His justice is for those who persist in arrogance. Be among those who earn His pardon through faith, obedience, and sincere return to Him.

📜 Verse 116-120 — Al-Maidah

And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen.
I said not to them except what You commanded me - to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.
If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Allah will say, "This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness." For them are gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them, and they with Him. That is the great attainment.
To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is within them. And He is over all things competent.
