📖 English Meaning
I said not to them except what You commanded me - to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.

Word Meanings:

  • Shahīdan (شَهِيدًا): A witness who observes and testifies to what people say and do.
  • Tawaffaytani (تَوَفَّيْتَنِي): You took me fully — here referring to Allah raising Jesus (peace be upon him) alive to the heavens and ending his time on earth.
  • Ar-Raqīb (الرَّقِيب): The All-Watchful Guardian who oversees everything and from whom nothing is hidden.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Jesus (peace be upon him) stands before his Lord on the Day of Judgment, responding to Allah's question: "Did you tell the people to take you and your mother as gods besides Allah?" (5:116). With complete humility and truthfulness, Jesus declares his absolute innocence and total submission to his Creator.

Jesus says: "I said nothing to them except what You commanded me to say." He then clarifies exactly what that command was: "Worship Allah — my Lord and your Lord." This was the essence of his message — pure monotheism, calling people to worship Allah alone, without any partner or associate. He never claimed divinity for himself, nor did he ever instruct anyone to worship him or his mother.

Jesus then explains his role among his people: "I was a witness over them as long as I remained among them." During his time on earth, he observed their words and deeds, guiding them, correcting them, and calling them to the straight path. He was a living witness to what they said and did while he was present with them.

Then comes a beautiful transition: "But when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them." When Allah raised him to the heavens, his earthly mission ended, and Allah's complete oversight continued. Jesus affirms that Allah alone is the Guardian who watches over all His creation, and He is a Witness over all things — nothing escapes His knowledge, whether in the heavens or on the earth.

This verse teaches us the complete innocence of Prophet Jesus from the false claims made about him. It also reminds us of the purity of his message — the same message brought by all prophets: worship Allah alone. And it reassures us that Allah is always watching over us, knowing our every word and deed, and that every person will be held accountable for what they did.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a powerful lesson for every believer. Jesus (peace be upon him) was a devoted servant of Allah, calling people to the same truth that every prophet called to — the worship of Allah alone. His words echo the message of the Quran: "And We sent no messenger before you except that We revealed to him: 'There is no deity except Me, so worship Me'" (21:25).

As Muslims, we honor Jesus as a mighty messenger of Allah, and we love him as we love all the prophets. This verse strengthens our faith and reminds us that the path of true servitude to Allah is the path of all prophets. It also comforts us — knowing that Allah is the Watcher over all affairs, and that He will judge between people with perfect justice on the Day when all secrets are revealed.

Let this verse inspire you to purify your worship, making it solely for Allah, and to be a witness to the truth in your own life — just as Jesus was a witness to his people. For Allah is the All-Watching, the All-Knowing, and He is a Witness over all things.

📜 Verse 115-119 — Al-Maidah

Allah said, "Indeed, I will sent it down to you, but whoever disbelieves afterwards from among you - then indeed will I punish him with a punishment by which I have not punished anyone among the worlds."
And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen.
I said not to them except what You commanded me - to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.
If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Allah will say, "This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness." For them are gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them, and they with Him. That is the great attainment.
