Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Ithm (الإثم): Sin, transgression against Allah's commands, including falsehood and disbelief.
  • Al-Udwan (العدوان): Aggression, injustice, and overstepping the bounds set by Allah against others.
  • Al-Suht (السحت): Forbidden earnings, such as bribery, usury, and any wealth acquired through unlawful means.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a profound observation: "And you see many of them hastening into sin and aggression and the devouring of unlawful earnings." The pronoun "them" refers primarily to the Jews of Medina, and by extension, to the hypocrites among them. Allah draws attention to their swift and eager pursuit of transgression—not merely falling into it, but racing toward it. Their sins included speaking falsehood, distorting the truth, and engaging in acts of injustice against others. They also consumed what is forbidden, particularly through bribery and corrupt practices, which is described as *al-suht*—a term that signifies wealth earned through means that Allah has prohibited, leaving no blessing in it.

The verse concludes with a stern condemnation: "How wretched is what they used to do!" This is not merely a rebuke but a divine declaration of the ugliness of their deeds. It serves as a warning that such actions, when persisted in, lead to spiritual ruin and distance from Allah's mercy.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a timeless lesson for every believer. It calls us to examine our own lives: Are we hastening toward righteousness, or are we, knowingly or unknowingly, hastening toward sin? The beauty of Islam lies in its call to purity—purity of speech, purity of dealings, and purity of earnings. When a Muslim avoids unlawful wealth and injustice, they protect not only their worldly integrity but also their standing with Allah. Let this verse inspire you to be among those who race toward good deeds, for Allah loves those who strive in righteousness. And remember, the wealth earned through halal (lawful) means is a source of barakah (blessing), while the unlawful leaves only regret in this life and the next. Turn to Allah in repentance, for He is ever-Forgiving and Merciful to those who seek His pleasure.

📜 Verse 60-64 — Al-Maidah

Say, "Shall I inform you of [what is] worse than that as penalty from Allah? [It is that of] those whom Allah has cursed and with whom He became angry and made of them apes and pigs and slaves of Taghut. Those are worse in position and further astray from the sound way."
And when they come to you, they say, "We believe." But they have entered with disbelief [in their hearts], and they have certainly left with it. And Allah is most knowing of what they were concealing.
And you see many of them hastening into sin and aggression and the devouring of [what is] unlawful. How wretched is what they have been doing.
Why do the rabbis and religious scholars not forbid them from saying what is sinful and devouring what is unlawful? How wretched is what they have been practicing.
And the Jews say, "The hand of Allah is chained." Chained are their hands, and cursed are they for what they say. Rather, both His hands are extended; He spends however He wills. And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. And We have cast among them animosity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. Every time they kindled the fire of war [against you], Allah extinguished it. And they strive throughout the land [causing] corruption, and Allah does not like corrupters.
