Key Words and Phrases:

  • تَوَلَّىٰ (tawallā): Turned away, withdrew, or rejected.
  • بِرُكْنِهِ (biruknihi): With his side, power, or might; refers to his strength, army, and supporters that formed his "pillar" of authority.
  • سَاحِرٌ (sāḥir): A sorcerer or magician.
  • مَجْنُونٌ (majnūn): Insane, mad, or possessed.

Explanation of the Verse:

When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) was sent to Pharaoh and his chiefs with clear signs and undeniable miracles—such as the staff turning into a serpent and his hand shining white—these were profound proofs of Allah’s power and a warning for those who fear the painful punishment. Yet, Pharaoh, swollen with arrogance and pride in his dominion, his soldiers, and his vast resources, turned away from the truth in utter rejection. He did not engage with the message or reflect on the signs; instead, he leaned on his false sense of security—his "pillar" of power and followers—and dismissed Musa with a contemptuous accusation: "He is either a sorcerer or a madman." With these words, Pharaoh tried to discredit the prophet, claiming that Musa’s miracles were mere trickery to deceive the people, or that he was insane, speaking words devoid of reason. This was a desperate attempt to undermine the truth and sway his people away from faith.

Reflection and Call to Faith:

This verse reveals a timeless pattern of arrogance: when confronted with undeniable truth, the proud often resort to mockery and false accusations rather than humble submission. Pharaoh’s rejection was not due to lack of evidence—the signs were crystal clear—but due to his ego and attachment to worldly power. For us, this is a profound lesson: the heart that is filled with pride and love for status finds it hard to accept guidance, while the humble heart readily embraces faith. Allah sent His prophets with miracles and wisdom to guide humanity, and He continues to send His signs through the Quran and the beauty of creation. Let us not be like Pharaoh, turning away with our "pillars" of wealth, intellect, or social standing. Instead, let us open our hearts to the truth, for true success lies in submission to Allah alone. The Quran is the ultimate miracle—a living guide that calls us to reflect, believe, and act righteously. Embrace it, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 37-41 — Adh-Dhariyat

And We left therein a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.
And in Moses [was a sign], when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.
But he turned away with his supporters and said," A magician or a madman."
So We took him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy.
And in 'Aad [was a sign], when We sent against them the barren wind.
