Word Meanings:

Or" – used here as an interrogative-retorical particle expressing denial and rebuke.
  • إِلَٰهٌ – a deity or god worthy of worship.
  • غَيْرُ اللَّهِ – other than Allah.
Glory be to Allah; declaring Him free from every imperfection and deficiency.
  • عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ – from what they associate (with Him) as partners in worship.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse poses a profound rhetorical question to those who reject the truth: "Or do they have a deity other than Allah?" It is a challenge that leaves no room for evasion. The implication is clear—if they claim there is another god worthy of worship, let them produce him, describe him, or prove his existence. But they cannot, because no such deity exists. There is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone—the Creator, the Sustainer, the Sovereign of all that exists.

The verse then declares: "Glory be to Allah above what they associate [with Him]." This is a declaration of Allah's absolute transcendence and purity. He is far above and completely free from the false partners, idols, and imagined deities that the polytheists associate with Him. He has no partner in His dominion, no equal in His essence, and no rival in His right to be worshipped. His majesty is beyond any comparison, and His oneness is absolute.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that the universe, with all its order, beauty, and precision, points to a single, all-powerful Creator. The false gods that people invent—whether idols of stone, celestial bodies, or worldly desires—are mere creations, powerless to benefit or harm. How then could they be placed alongside the Almighty?

For the believer, this verse is a call to purify one's heart from all forms of hidden shirk—such as showing off in worship or relying on created beings instead of the Creator. It invites us to reflect: if there is truly no god but Allah, then our hearts should be devoted to Him alone, our hopes placed in Him alone, and our worship directed to Him alone. This is the essence of Islam—the complete submission of the heart, tongue, and limbs to the One who deserves all praise and worship.

The verse also carries a gentle yet firm invitation to those who have not yet embraced the truth: open your eyes to the undeniable evidence of Allah's oneness. The heavens and the earth, the alternation of night and day, the intricate design of your own being—all testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. So why turn to false gods that cannot hear, see, or help? Come to the worship of the One who created you, sustains you, and will judge you with perfect justice.

Subhan Allah—glory be to Him, far above every imperfection, far above every false claim, and far above anything that the minds of His creatures might wrongly attribute to Him.

Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?
Or do they intend a plan? But those who disbelieve - they are the object of a plan.
Or have they a deity other than Allah? Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.
And if they were to see a fragment from the sky falling, they would say, "[It is merely] clouds heaped up."
So leave them until they meet their Day in which they will be struck insensible -
