Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ظَنّ (Dhann): Conjecture, assumption, or mere speculation—a belief formed without certain knowledge or evidence.
- لَا يُغْنِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْئًا: Does not avail anything against the truth—meaning it cannot substitute for or replace the truth in any way.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse addresses a profound error committed by the disbelievers of Makkah. They claimed that the angels were female and that they were daughters of Allah—a claim utterly devoid of any knowledge or evidence. Allah responds to their baseless assertion by declaring that they have no knowledge whatsoever to support such a statement. They are not following anything but pure conjecture and false imagination.
The verse then delivers a timeless principle: "And indeed, conjecture avails nothing against the truth." This is a universal truth that applies to all times and places. Mere assumptions, guesses, or wishful thinking can never stand in the place of certain knowledge. The truth is established through revelation, sound reasoning, and clear evidence—not through speculation or inherited beliefs.
This principle is profoundly relevant to every human being. How many people today hold beliefs about God, the purpose of life, and the afterlife based on nothing more than what they inherited from their parents or what society dictates? How many follow their own desires and call it "truth"? The Quran challenges us to rise above blind following and to seek certainty through the guidance that Allah has revealed.
The beauty of Islam is that it invites people to use their intellect and to base their faith on certainty, not conjecture. Allah does not ask us to believe blindly; He presents signs in the universe, in our own creation, and in the revelation of the Quran itself. When we reflect upon these signs with an open heart, we arrive at the truth with conviction—not with shaky assumptions.
Dear reader, this verse is a call to examine your own beliefs. Are you following the truth with certainty, or are you merely following what you grew up with? The truth is not something to be taken lightly. It is the difference between success and failure in this life and the Hereafter. Seek the truth with sincerity, and you will find that Islam provides answers that satisfy both the mind and the heart—answers built on certainty, not conjecture.
