Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- A'rid (أَعْرِضْ): Turn away from, leave them alone, do not concern yourself with them.
- Tawallā (تَوَلَّىٰ): Turned his back, rejected, deliberately ignored and distanced himself.
- Dhikrinā (ذِكْرِنَا): Our Reminder — meaning the Qur'an and the message of guidance revealed to the Prophet ﷺ.
- Lam yurid illā al-ḥayāt al-dunyā (وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا): He desired nothing except the worldly life — its pleasures, gains, and fleeting enjoyments — with no concern for the Hereafter.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet, turn away from those who have turned their backs on Our Reminder — the Qur'an — and who have no desire except the life of this world. They have rejected divine guidance and chosen instead the temporary allurements of worldly existence, caring nothing for what lies beyond death. Their ultimate goal is the gratification of their desires in this life, and they have no aspiration for the eternal life to come.
This verse carries a profound lesson: the one who abandons the remembrance of Allah and confines his ambitions to worldly matters has reached the limit of his knowledge and aspiration. Such a person has sealed his own fate by choosing the transient over the everlasting. The Prophet ﷺ is instructed to disengage from such people — not out of indifference to their guidance, but because their hearts have become hardened against the truth, and their preoccupation with worldly gains leaves no room for reflection on the divine message.
Indeed, your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path and who has been guided. Nothing is hidden from Him — He sees the hearts of all His servants and knows precisely where each soul stands in relation to His guidance.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ask yourself: what is it that truly occupies your heart and mind? Is it the fleeting pleasures of this world that vanish like a mirage, or is it the eternal bliss that awaits those who remember their Lord? This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder that our time in this world is but a brief station on a journey that leads to eternity. Those who turn away from the Qur'an and chase only worldly gains are like a traveler who becomes so enchanted by the roadside flowers that he forgets his final destination.
The Qur'an is the light that illuminates the path to everlasting success. Whoever clings to it and works for the Hereafter has indeed achieved the greatest triumph — for the life to come is far better and more enduring than all the treasures of this world combined. Let this verse inspire you to elevate your ambitions beyond the temporary, to seek the pleasure of Allah, and to make the Qur'an the compass of your life. For the one who remembers Allah and strives for the Hereafter has secured a treasure that never perishes, while the one who turns away has lost both this world's true purpose and the eternal reward.
