Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Mu'tafikah (المؤتفكة): The overturned towns — specifically the cities of the people of Lot (Lut), which were turned upside down.
  • Ahwa (أهوى): He (Allah) caused them to fall, bringing them down from above after raising them high.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah Almighty declares that He destroyed the overturned cities — the habitations of the people of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him). These were the towns of Sodom and its surroundings, where the inhabitants committed an abominable sin never before perpetrated by any creation. When their transgression reached its peak and they persisted in their defiance despite the repeated warnings of their Prophet, Allah's punishment descended upon them.

The Angel Gabriel (peace be upon him) lifted those cities from the earth up to the heavens, carrying them so high that the angels of the lower heaven could hear the barking of their dogs and the crowing of their roosters. Then, at Allah's command, he overturned them and cast them down to the earth, so that their uppermost parts became their lowermost — a complete inversion that left no trace of their former structure. Allah then followed this with a rain of stones of baked clay, sealing their destruction utterly.

This verse serves as a profound reminder of Allah's absolute power and His swift justice against those who persist in wickedness. The fate of the people of Lot stands as an eternal lesson for humanity — that no matter how powerful, wealthy, or established a people may be, they can never escape the grasp of their Creator when His decree comes to pass.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder how Allah dealt with those who corrupted the earth and transgressed all bounds. He raised them high only to bring them crashing down — a demonstration that no height of worldly power can protect anyone from divine justice. Yet, in His infinite mercy, Allah sent prophets to warn them before destruction, just as He has sent the Qur'an to us as a living guidance. The door of repentance remains open for you today — do not delay your return to your Lord, for none knows when the final hour will come. Let the fate of those before you be a lesson, and let the mercy of Allah be your hope, for He says: "Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53).

📜 Verse 51-55 — An-Najm

51وَثَمُودَ فَمَا أَبْقَىٰ
And Thamud - and He did not spare [them] -
52وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ
And the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing.
53وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ
And the overturned towns He hurled down
54فَغَشَّاهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ
And covered them by that which He covered.
55فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ
Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt?
