Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Meanings:
- Rīḥan ṣarṣaran (رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا): A fiercely cold, violent wind — extremely loud and piercing in its sound, bitter in its chill, and destructive in its force.
- Yawmi naḥsin (يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ): A day of misfortune, calamity, and ill omen.
- Mustamirr (مُسْتَمِرٍّ): Continuous, unceasing — meaning the misfortune and punishment persisted without respite, lasting throughout that day and beyond.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) informs us of the fate that befell the people of ‘Ād — the tribe that rejected the message of Prophet Hūd (peace be upon him) and persisted in arrogance and disbelief. When their defiance reached its peak and they mocked the warnings, Allah sent upon them a punishment unlike any other: a violent, freezing wind, howling with a terrifying roar, unleashed upon them on a day of unrelenting calamity and ill fortune. This was not a brief storm that passed quickly; rather, it was a day of continuous misery — the wind raged on, and the misfortune clung to them like a shadow, from the first blast to their final destruction. The wind tore through everything in its path, uprooting people from the earth and hurling them down, breaking their necks and severing their heads from their bodies, leaving them like palm trees toppled from their roots — lifeless, scattered, and utterly destroyed. Their punishment was so severe that it followed them even into the Hereafter, for their fate was sealed with eternal loss.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the power of the One who sends such a wind with a single command. The same Allah who destroyed the arrogant nations of old is alive, watching, and fully capable of dealing with those who oppose His message today. Yet, in His infinite mercy, He has given us the Qur’an — a book of guidance, not a book of destruction. He has sent us the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a mercy to all worlds, not as a bringer of immediate punishment. This verse is not merely a story of the past; it is a living reminder that Allah’s justice is real, and His warnings are true. But it is also a door of hope: if you turn to Him sincerely, repent from your sins, and follow His guidance, you will be saved from every calamity — just as He saved Hūd and the believers from that terrible wind. Do not wait until the storm comes; seek His protection now, through faith, prayer, and good deeds. The Lord who sent the wind can also send peace, mercy, and blessings upon you — if only you turn to Him with a sincere heart.
