Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse recounts a moment of profound wickedness and divine justice. When the angels came to Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) as honored guests, his corrupt people—who had sunk deeply into the abomination of homosexuality—came rushing to him, demanding that he hand over his guests so they could commit their vile act against them. They did not merely ask; they pressured and insisted, driven by their unbridled lust and moral depravity.
But Allah, the All-Powerful, did not abandon His prophet or His angels. In an instant, He struck the eyes of these transgressors with blindness—He "blotted out" their sight entirely, so they could no longer see the guests they sought to harm. They stumbled about, disoriented and helpless, unable to carry out their evil design. And then the divine decree was pronounced: "Taste My punishment and My warnings!" This was both a literal taste of humiliation in this world—their sudden blindness—and a foretaste of the greater, more devastating punishment that would soon follow when the entire city was turned upside down and destroyed.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for all times: Allah defends His righteous servants and His messengers. No matter how powerful or numerous the wicked may seem, their schemes are nothing before the might of Allah. When evil reaches its peak and people reject repeated warnings, divine justice descends swiftly and decisively. The punishment here was twofold: immediate humiliation through blindness, followed by total annihilation through the catastrophic punishment that destroyed the entire people of Lut.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, see how Allah protected His prophet and His guests in the face of overwhelming evil. The people of Lut had every advantage in numbers and strength, yet they were rendered utterly powerless in a single moment. This is the reality of Allah's power—He is the Protector of the believers, the Defender of the righteous, and the Avenger against the corrupt.
Let this verse be a reminder that no matter how much evil surrounds you, Allah is always with those who fear Him and do good. When you are tested, when you face opposition for your faith, remember that the same Allah who blinded the wicked people of Lut is alive and watching over you today. He has not changed, and His power has not diminished. Turn to Him with sincere hearts, and He will never abandon you.
And let it also be a warning: do not follow the path of those who persist in sin and reject divine guidance. Their end was destruction in this world and the Hereafter. But the door of repentance is open for those who turn back to Allah before it is too late. Allah loves those who repent and purify themselves, and His mercy encompasses all things. Choose the path of Lut's righteousness, not the path of his people's ruin.
