Word Meanings:
- صَبَّحَهُم (Sabbahahum): It came upon them in the morning, i.e., the punishment reached them at dawn.
- بُكْرَةً (Bukratan): Early morning, the first part of the day.
- عَذَابٌ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ (‘Adhabun Mustaqirr): A lasting, settled punishment that remained with them and did not lift.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse tells us that the punishment which Allah sent upon the people of Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) descended upon them in the early morning, at the time of dawn. It was not a fleeting torment that came and went; rather, it was a *mustaqirr* — a punishment that settled upon them, clung to them, and remained with them until it delivered them to the even greater punishment of the Hereafter.
The nature of this punishment was catastrophic: they were pelted with stones of baked clay, and their entire towns were turned upside down — the highest parts became the lowest, and vice versa. This was the direct consequence of their persistent disbelief, their rejection of Lut’s message, and their engagement in abominable sins that had never been committed before in all of creation.
The verse serves as a powerful reminder that Allah’s decree is precise and His justice is swift when a people persist in transgression. The morning that began like any other for them became the moment of their utter destruction — a morning they never saw end.
A Da’wah Reflection:
How often do we take the morning for granted? We wake up, and we assume the day will unfold as usual. But the people of Lut woke up to a morning that was their last. This verse invites us to live every single day with awareness of Allah, to never feel secure from His plan, and to rush to repentance before a punishment becomes *mustaqirr* — settled and inescapable.
At the same time, it is a message of hope for the believers: Allah defended His prophet Lut and saved him and his family from that horrific fate. The same Allah who protects His righteous servants is watching over you. So hold firm to your faith, avoid the sins that bring destruction, and know that no matter how dark the night of trials becomes, the morning of Allah’s relief for the believers is always near.
Let this verse be a wake-up call to examine our own lives: Are there sins we have normalized that could bring a settled punishment upon us? The door of repentance is open, and Allah’s mercy is vast — but that door will not remain open forever. Seize the moment before the morning of regret arrives.
