Translation — Tafsir
Meanings of Key Words:
- حُطَامًا (Hutaman): Crushed, broken pieces; dry, brittle fragments that are of no benefit.
- تَفَكَّهُونَ (Tafakkahoon): To express wonder and amazement; to be astonished at what has happened, often accompanied by regret and lamentation.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Allah reminds humanity of the miracle of agriculture—how seeds are sown into the earth and, by His will alone, sprout into thriving crops—He now presents a humbling truth: "If We willed, We would make it dry, broken debris, and you would remain astonished."
This verse paints a vivid scene: a farmer tends his land with hope, watching the green shoots rise, anticipating a bountiful harvest. Yet, in an instant, the very same Lord who caused the growth can reduce it to worthless chaff—struck by a scorching wind, a pestilence, or a sudden calamity. The farmer stands helpless, his hands empty, his heart filled with disbelief and sorrow. His reaction is not one of simple sadness but of profound bewilderment—"How could this happen? What went wrong?"—as if the world itself had turned against him.
This is not a threat meant to instill despair, but a divine lesson in humility and reliance. It reminds every soul that human effort, no matter how meticulous, is utterly dependent on the will of the Creator. The seed, the soil, the rain, the sun—all are gifts from Allah, and He alone sustains them. When we recognize this, we shift from arrogance to gratitude, from self-reliance to trust in Allah.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and ponder: the same hand that brings forth life from a lifeless seed is the hand that holds your every affair. If Allah can turn a flourishing field into dust in a moment, then surely He is capable of transforming your trials into ease, your weakness into strength, and your hardship into blessings. This verse is an invitation to soften your heart, to turn to your Lord in humility, and to say: "We belong to Allah, and to Him we return." For the One who controls the harvest also controls your destiny—and His mercy is far greater than any loss you may face. Do not let the fleeting nature of this world make you forget the eternal reward that awaits those who remain patient and grateful. Indeed, in every test lies a hidden treasure for the believer.
