Word Meanings:

  • لَمُغْرَمُونَ (la-mughramūn): This word comes from the root "gh-r-m," which means to be burdened with a debt or penalty that one is compelled to pay. In this context, it signifies being afflicted with a calamity, punished, or struck with a loss that leaves one in a state of ruin and despair. It also carries the sense of being "forced to pay a heavy price" or "overwhelmed by a disaster."

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah describes the state of the disbelievers and the heedless when they witness the destruction of their crops—a harvest they had labored over with great effort and hope. After all their toil, if Allah wills, the plants turn into dry, brittle chaff, useless for any benefit. At that moment, the people exclaim in shock and regret: "Indeed, we are burdened with loss and punishment!" They realize that their efforts have come to nothing, and they feel the weight of their misfortune as if they are being penalized for something they have done.

This statement reflects their despair and their acknowledgment that they have been struck by a calamity beyond their control. They say this because they have invested their wealth, time, and energy, only to see it all vanish in an instant. Their words reveal a deep sense of helplessness and a recognition that they are being "charged" with a heavy loss—one that leaves them destitute and grieving.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. The farmer who tills the soil, plants the seed, and waters it with patience—does he bring forth the harvest by his own power? No! It is Allah alone who causes the seed to sprout, the plant to grow, and the grain to ripen. And just as He can bring life from the earth, He can also turn that life into dust in the blink of an eye.

This verse is a profound reminder of our utter dependence on Allah. We may plan, strive, and toil, but the outcome rests entirely in His hands. When we witness a loss or a hardship, do we respond with patience and faith, or do we fall into despair and complaint? The believer understands that everything—success and failure, abundance and scarcity—comes from Allah, and in every situation, there is wisdom and a lesson.

So, turn to your Lord with a humble heart. Thank Him for the blessings you have, and trust Him with what you do not have. For He is the One who gives, and He is the One who takes away, and His mercy encompasses all things. Do not let the trials of this world shake your faith, for the true reward lies with Allah—eternal and never-ending. And remember: even in loss, there is an opportunity to draw closer to Him, to purify your intentions, and to strengthen your reliance on the Most Merciful.

📜 Verse 64-68 — Al-Waqi'ah

64أَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الزَّارِعُونَ
Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?
65لَوْ نَشَاءُ لَجَعَلْنَاهُ حُطَامًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ
If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder,
66إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ
[Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt;
67بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ
Rather, we have been deprived."
68أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ الْمَاءَ الَّذِي تَشْرَبُونَ
And have you seen the water that you drink?
