Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tazra‘oonahu (تَزْرَعُونَهُ): Do you cause it to grow and sprout from the earth?
  • Az-Zari‘oon (الزَّارِعُونَ): The Ones Who cause it to grow and bring it forth — i.e., Allah alone.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Exalted, presents a profound question to humanity — a question that strips away all pretense of self-sufficiency and redirects the heart toward its true Provider. He asks: "Is it you who cause the seed to sprout and grow into a flourishing crop, or are We the Ones Who cause it to grow?"

The reality is that the farmer merely places the seed in the soil and tends to it with water and care. But who splits the seed open? Who commands the roots to descend and the shoot to rise? Who brings forth from the dark earth a green, living plant? It is Allah alone — the True Cultivator, the Sustainer of all creation. The farmer’s role is nothing but a means; the actual creation, growth, and provision are entirely in the Hands of Allah.

This verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder that every morsel of food we eat, every harvest we gather, is a direct gift from Allah. If He willed, He could make that same seed produce nothing but dry, brittle chaff — useless and scattered by the wind. The very fact that the seed grows, that the rain falls, that the sun shines, and that the harvest is reaped is a continuous miracle of His mercy.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on the next meal you eat. That bread, that fruit, that grain — it did not come into existence by your power or intelligence. It came by the will of the Most Merciful, Who sustains you without you even asking. This is not merely a physical process; it is a sign pointing to the Creator, inviting you to know Him, thank Him, and worship Him alone.

When you realize that your very sustenance is in Allah’s Hands, your heart finds peace. You no longer fear poverty, for the One Who feeds the birds and causes the earth to yield its fruit is your Provider too. And you no longer become arrogant in your wealth, for you know that it is a trust from Allah, not a product of your own genius.

Let this verse awaken in you a profound sense of humility and gratitude. Say with a sincere heart: "Alhamdulillah — all praise is due to Allah, the One Who causes the seed to grow, Who provides for all creatures, and Who has blessed me with countless favors I cannot even count." And let this gratitude draw you closer to Him, for He says: "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]." (Ibrahim 14:7)
