Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Waliyyan (وَلِيًّا): A protector, supporter, or deity to be worshipped and relied upon.
- Fatir (فَاطِرِ): The Originator and Creator who brought the heavens and the earth into existence without any prior model or example.
- Yut’imu wa la yut’am (يُطْعِمُ وَلَا يُطْعَمُ): He provides sustenance to all creation, while He Himself is free of all need and is not fed or sustained by anyone.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, say to those who call you to worship other than Allah: “Shall I take any protector or deity other than Allah? He alone is the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the One who created them with perfect wisdom and power. He is the Provider who feeds all of His creation, yet He is not fed by anyone, for He is utterly self-sufficient and in need of nothing. How then could I turn to false gods who can neither create, nor provide, nor protect?”
Then Allah commands you to declare: “I have been commanded to be the very first of this nation to submit wholeheartedly to Allah, surrendering my will, my worship, and my entire life to Him alone. And I have been forbidden—strictly and clearly—from ever being among those who associate partners with Him in worship.”
This verse carries a profound message of pure monotheism (Tawheed). It teaches us that true honor and protection come only from Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of all existence. When you place your trust in Allah, you are relying on the One who never fails, who provides for all, and who needs nothing from His creation. How beautiful is this faith! It liberates the heart from dependence on created beings and connects it directly to the Almighty, the Most Merciful, the Provider of all sustenance.
Let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart: who is your true protector? Who do you turn to in times of hardship? The answer for every believer should be clear—Allah alone. And just as the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to be the first to submit, we too are called to be among those who lead lives of complete surrender to Allah, distancing ourselves from every form of shirk—whether in worship, in trust, or in obedience. This is the path of true success and eternal peace.
