Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَرَأَيْتَكُمْ (ara'aytakum): Tell me, inform me — a rhetorical question meant to provoke thought and self-reflection.
- السَّاعَةُ (al-sā'ah): The Hour — the Day of Resurrection and Judgment.
- تَدْعُونَ (tad'ūn): You call upon, you invoke, you supplicate to.
- صَادِقِينَ (ṣādiqīn): Truthful, sincere in your claim.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, say to these polytheists who worship idols and false deities alongside Allah: "Tell me honestly — if Allah's punishment were to descend upon you in this life, or if the Hour of Resurrection were to suddenly overtake you, to whom would you turn for help? Would you call upon your idols and false gods, or would you instinctively cry out to Allah alone?"
This verse is a powerful rhetorical challenge that exposes the deep contradiction in the hearts of the disbelievers. In times of ease and comfort, they associate partners with Allah and claim that their idols bring benefit or ward off harm. But when calamity strikes — when death approaches or the horrors of the Last Day unfold — all false gods are forgotten. Their true nature surfaces, and they call upon none but Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of all worlds.
The verse invites every person to reflect: if you are truthful in your claim that your idols, your wealth, your status, or any other object of worship can protect you, then call upon them when disaster strikes! But you know — and every human being knows deep within their fitrah (natural disposition) — that no one answers the desperate call except Allah. Even the most stubborn polytheist, when a ship is about to sink or a calamity befalls, cries out to Allah alone, as mentioned in other verses of the Qur'an.
This is a beautiful reminder of the innate monotheism embedded in every soul. It calls us to purify our worship and direct it solely to Allah — not only in times of hardship, but in times of ease as well. For the One who answers in times of dire need is the same One who sustains us every moment of our lives. So why not turn to Him always, with gratitude and devotion?
The verse also carries a gentle yet firm warning: the punishment of Allah is real, and the Hour is certain to come. No one knows when. But the door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Let us be among those who call upon Allah in all circumstances — in ease and in difficulty — and who worship Him alone, with sincerity and love.
