Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ham-maz (هَمَّازٍ): One who constantly mocks, defames, and finds fault with others, often through sarcasm or belittling gestures.
- Mash-sha (مَشَّاءٍ): One who frequently walks about, moving from place to place.
- Bi-namim (بِنَمِيمٍ): Carrying tales and spreading gossip between people to stir up discord and enmity.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes two deeply blameworthy traits that Allah commands His Messenger (peace be upon him) — and by extension every believer — to never follow or obey. The first trait is being a *ham-maz*: a person who habitually mocks others, points out their flaws, and tears down their reputation, whether through words, gestures, or subtle ridicule. Such a person derives pleasure from humiliating others and sowing division through contempt.
The second trait is being a *mash-sha bi-namim*: one who constantly moves among people carrying tales — taking a statement from one person and delivering it to another with the intent of corrupting relationships. The *namimah* (tale-carrying) is not merely harmless gossip; it is a deliberate act of spreading discord, turning friends into enemies, and breaking the bonds of trust within a community. The repetition of the word "walker" emphasizes that this person is relentless in this evil habit, going from one gathering to another, igniting fires of hatred wherever they go.
These two traits are mentioned together because they share a common root: a diseased heart that finds joy in the downfall of others. The mocker destroys a person's dignity, while the tale-carrier destroys the harmony between people. Both are acts of psychological and social violence that Islam utterly condemns.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, ponder how easily these traits creep into daily life — a sarcastic remark, a whispered "Did you hear what so-and-so said?" — and how quickly they poison hearts. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us that the best among us are those who are safe from their tongue and hand. Imagine the reward of guarding your speech: the Prophet said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." Every word you withhold from mockery or tale-carrying is a step toward Paradise. And every time you defend an absent brother or sister from backbiting, Allah defends you in this life and the next. Let this verse be a mirror for your soul: if you find these traits in yourself, repent and replace them with kindness, forgiveness, and the beautiful habit of speaking only what builds others up. The Quran is not just a book to read — it is a guide to purify the heart and transform society into a community of love and mutual respect. Embrace it, and you will taste the sweetness of faith.
