Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Sanasimuhu" (سَنَسِمُهُ): We will brand or mark him — from *wasm*, meaning to make a lasting mark or brand, as is done with cattle.
  • "Al-Khurtum" (الْخُرْطُومِ): Literally the trunk or snout; in reference to humans, it means the nose. It is used here as a term of belittlement and humiliation.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah — the Almighty — delivers a decisive and terrifying promise to the ringleader of the disbelievers who mocked the Prophet ﷺ and rejected the Qur'an. After the previous verses described his arrogance and his vile call to abandon the message of truth, Allah declares: "We will brand him on the nose."

This means that Allah will place a permanent, visible mark of disgrace upon his nose — the most prominent and honorable part of the human face — as a sign of humiliation that he cannot hide or remove. He will be exposed before all people, disgraced in this world and in the Hereafter. Some scholars have explained that this refers to a physical disfigurement that will befall him, while others interpret it as a metaphorical branding — meaning that Allah will make his shame and punishment everlasting and unmistakable, so that his dishonor becomes as clear as a brand on an animal's nose.

This is a severe and fitting punishment for one who used his nose in pride and arrogance, turning away from the truth and mocking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The One who created the nose, shaped it, and gave it its beauty, is fully capable of disfiguring it and turning it into a mark of shame.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, let this verse be a powerful reminder of Allah's absolute justice and His perfect ability to repay every soul according to its deeds. No tyrant, no matter how powerful or wealthy, can escape the watchful eye of Allah. The very features that a person takes pride in can become the means of their humiliation if they use them in arrogance against the truth.

This should fill the believer's heart with awe and gratitude — awe of Allah's might, and gratitude for being guided to the path of humility and submission. It also invites us to examine ourselves: do we use our tongues, our eyes, our faces, and our positions to serve the truth, or to mock it? Let us hasten to repent and turn to Allah before the day comes when no mark can be erased and no shame can be covered.

Indeed, Allah is Most Merciful to those who return to Him, and His punishment is severe upon those who persist in arrogance and mockery. Choose humility today, and you will be honored tomorrow.

📜 Verse 14-18 — Al-Qalam

14أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ
Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,
15إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
16سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى الْخُرْطُومِ
We will brand him upon the snout.
17إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ
Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning
18وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ
Without making exception.
