Word Meanings:
- مَا لَكُمْ (What is the matter with you): An expression of astonishment and rebuke, meaning "What has happened to you?" or "What is wrong with you?"
- كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ (How do you judge?): Referring to their faulty reasoning and unjust judgment, specifically their claim that believers and disbelievers will receive equal treatment in the Hereafter.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a powerful rhetorical question directed at the disbelievers of Makkah, who claimed that if there were to be a resurrection, they would receive the same honor and reward as the believers. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, exposes the absurdity of this claim with a tone of profound astonishment and rebuke.
The verse asks: "What is the matter with you? How do you judge?" — meaning, what kind of logic leads you to such a corrupt and unjust conclusion? How can you possibly equate those who submit to Allah in faith and obedience with those who reject Him and persist in disbelief? This is not merely a mistake in reasoning; it is a fundamental flaw in your entire worldview.
The question is posed in a way that leaves no room for a valid answer. It is as if Allah is saying: "By what standard, by what measure, do you arrive at such a verdict?" The implied answer is that there is no sound basis for their judgment whatsoever. It is a judgment born of arrogance, wishful thinking, and a refusal to accept the reality of divine justice.
This verse serves as a wake-up call to all humanity. It reminds us that Allah's justice is perfect and absolute. He does not treat the righteous and the wicked equally, just as a just judge would never treat the innocent and the criminal in the same manner. The Hereafter is a place of perfect recompense, where every soul will be rewarded or punished according to its deeds.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound question. If you truly believe in a Creator who is All-Wise and All-Just, how could you ever imagine that He would treat those who worship Him sincerely and those who defy Him in the same way? This verse invites you to align your thinking with divine wisdom, to recognize that true success lies not in wishful thinking, but in sincere faith and righteous action. Let this question stir your heart, and let it lead you to the path of truth — the path of Islam, which honors the believer and holds everyone accountable for their choices. For indeed, Allah's promise is true, and His justice is beyond any doubt.
