Word Meanings:
- "Falā" (فَلَا): This is a refutation particle, meaning "Nay" or "Indeed not," used to negate the false claims of the disbelievers.
- "Uqsimu" (أُقْسِمُ): "I swear" — an oath taken by Allah Himself, emphasizing the importance of what follows.
- "Bimā tubṣirūn" (بِمَا تُبْصِرُونَ): "By what you see" — referring to all visible creation that surrounds you.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah begins this verse with a powerful oath, swearing by everything that you can see with your own eyes. This includes the vast skies above you, the earth beneath your feet, the mountains, the seas, the sun, the moon, the stars, the trees, the animals, and your very own selves — every single visible creature and phenomenon that you witness daily.
The particle "Falā" here is not a negation of the oath itself, but rather a refutation of the false accusations made by the disbelievers of Makkah. They claimed that the Qur'an was the poetry of a madman, or the soothsaying of a fortune-teller, or mere human fabrication. In response, Allah says: "Nay — it is not as they claim! I swear by all that you see..."
By swearing by the visible world, Allah draws your attention to the perfection, order, and wisdom inherent in every created thing. Look at the precision of the universe, the balance of nature, the miracle of your own existence — can all of this be the product of chance? Can the One who created all of this with such perfection not be capable of sending down a Book of guidance?
This oath serves a dual purpose: it affirms the truth of the Qur'an while simultaneously inviting you to reflect on the signs of Allah that are constantly before your eyes. The visible world is not merely a stage for your daily life — it is a living testimony to the power and wisdom of its Creator. When you truly contemplate what you see, you will realize that the One who created all of this is far too great to let His final revelation be the work of a poet or a madman.
Dear reader, Allah is not merely asking you to look — He is inviting you to see with the eyes of your heart. Every sunrise and sunset, every breath you take, every star that twinkles in the night sky is a silent witness to the truth of His words. The Qur'an that you hold in your hands is not a human composition; it is the very speech of the One who created everything you see. So let your sight be a bridge to your faith, and let the world around you remind you of the greatness of its Creator.
