Word Meanings:

  • Wa mā lā tubṣirūn — "And what you do not see": This refers to all unseen creations and realities that are hidden from human sight, such as angels, jinn, the Throne, Paradise, Hellfire, and other metaphysical truths that exist beyond our visual perception.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) takes an oath by everything that is visible and perceptible to human eyes, and also by everything that lies beyond our sight and perception. This is a profound divine oath that encompasses both the seen and the unseen realms of existence.

The oath here serves as a powerful introduction to affirm the greatness and divine origin of the Qur'an. By swearing by both the visible and invisible creations, Allah draws our attention to the vastness of His creation — from the mountains, oceans, stars, and all that we can observe with our eyes, to the angels, the divine throne, the unseen worlds, and all that remains hidden from our limited vision.

This dual oath emphasizes that just as we witness the wonders of the visible world — the precise order of the universe, the beauty of nature, the complexity of our own bodies — there exists an even greater unseen reality that we cannot perceive with our physical senses, yet it is equally true and certain. The Qur'an, being the word of Allah, comes from the One who created both realms, and thus it carries a truth that transcends human perception and understanding.

The verse reminds us that human sight is limited, and our inability to see something does not negate its existence. Faith calls us to believe in the unseen, for the unseen is part of the divine reality that our Creator has revealed to us through His final message.

Da'wah Reflection:

This beautiful verse invites us to expand our horizons beyond the material world we see. It teaches us humility — acknowledging that our senses are limited and that there is a whole realm of existence beyond our perception. Just as we trust in things we cannot see in our daily lives — like the air we breathe or the signals that carry our words through space — we are called to trust in the truth of Allah's revelation, which comes from the Creator of all that is seen and unseen.

The Qur'an is not the product of human imagination or poetic fancy; it is the living word of Allah, preserved for humanity as a guide to success in this life and the next. When we reflect on the vastness of creation — both what we see and what we do not see — our hearts naturally incline toward the One who created it all, and we find in the Qur'an the light that illuminates our path toward Him. Embrace this divine message, for it is the key to understanding the purpose of your existence and the gateway to eternal bliss.
