Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fahbit (فَاهْبِطْ): Descend, go down, or leave from a higher place to a lower one.
- Tatakabbar (تَتَكَبَّرَ): To behave arrogantly, with pride and self-importance.
- As-Saghirin (الصَّاغِرِينَ): The humiliated, the disgraced, those brought low in shame and insignificance.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Exalted, addressed Iblis (Satan) after his refusal to prostrate to Adam, saying: "Descend from Paradise, for it is not for you to be arrogant here." Paradise is the abode of the pure, the obedient, and the humble servants of Allah—it is a place where arrogance has no place and cannot exist. How could one who defies the direct command of his Lord, and looks down upon another creation of Allah, dwell in a realm of such purity and honor?
Allah then commanded him: "Leave it—you are among the humiliated." This is a profound lesson: the one who exalts himself above others in pride is, in truth, brought low by Allah. Iblis thought himself superior to Adam based on his origin (fire versus clay), but his arrogance only led to his disgrace and expulsion. His self-perceived honor became his actual humiliation, and his rebellion stripped him of every dignity he once had.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless warning for every believer: arrogance is a poison that destroys the soul and distances one from the mercy of Allah. It was the very first sin committed against Allah, and it remains a door through which Shaytan enters the hearts of men and women. Reflect on your own heart—do you ever feel superior to others because of your wealth, knowledge, lineage, or deeds? Remember that true honor lies not in what you are made of or what you possess, but in your humility before Allah and your kindness toward His creation.
Paradise is not for the proud; it is for those who lower their wings to others, who walk gently on this earth, and who know that every blessing they have comes from Allah alone. Let this verse be a mirror for your soul: if arrogance led the mightiest of Allah's creatures to eternal disgrace, how much more careful must we be? Humble yourself before Allah now, and He will raise you in honor—both in this life and in the Hereafter. For Allah loves the humble, and He has promised His Paradise to those who purify their hearts from pride.
