Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

You approach men (for sexual acts).
Out of lust and carnal desire.
Instead of (or apart from) women.
Those who transgress all bounds, exceeding what is lawful and natural.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse is part of the narrative of Prophet Lut (Lot), peace be upon him, addressing his people who had fallen into a grave moral corruption. Allah, through the tongue of His Prophet, declares: "Indeed, you approach men with desire instead of women." This was not merely an act of sin — it was an unprecedented deviation from the natural order that Allah had instilled in all of creation. No community before them had committed such an act, making it a unique innovation in evil.

The phrase "instead of women" highlights the profound wisdom in this condemnation: Allah created male and female as complementary pairs, and the natural, lawful fulfillment of sexual desire is through marriage with women. By turning away from this divine design, the people of Lut were not following any sound reasoning, any revealed scripture, or any upright human instinct. Their action contradicted the very fitrah (innate disposition) with which Allah created humanity.

Then Allah says: "Rather, you are a people who transgress all bounds." This transgression (israf) here means exceeding the limits set by Allah — moving from what is lawful (halal) to what is forbidden (haram), and from what is natural to what is corrupt. The word "israf" also carries the meaning of going beyond moderation, and in this context, it points to an extreme deviation that even sound minds and pure hearts instinctively reject.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity. It teaches us that Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, has set clear boundaries for human behavior — not to restrict us, but to protect us, purify us, and guide us toward what brings true happiness in this life and the next. When we look at the world today, we see many forms of transgression against Allah's laws, and this verse reminds us that no society that abandons the natural order set by its Creator can ever achieve lasting peace or genuine fulfillment.

The story of Lut's people is not just history — it is a warning and a sign. It shows us that when a community normalizes what Allah has forbidden, it loses its moral compass and invites divine punishment. But it also shows us the mercy of Allah: He sent prophets to every nation to guide them back before punishment came. Today, the greatest mercy is that we have the Quran and the Sunnah — a complete guide for every aspect of life.

Dear reader, Allah's love for you is greater than any desire you may feel. He did not forbid anything except that which harms you, and He did not permit anything except that which benefits you. The path of chastity, marriage, and following the prophetic example is the path of honor, dignity, and true freedom. Whoever turns to Allah with sincerity, Allah will replace their darkness with light, their confusion with clarity, and their emptiness with contentment. Let this verse be a call to return to the natural way of life that Allah has designed for us — a life of purity, balance, and submission to the One who knows what is best for His creation.

📜 Verse 79-83 — Al-A'raf

And he turned away from them and said, "O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the message of my Lord and advised you, but you do not like advisors."
And [We had sent] Lot when he said to his people, "Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds?
Indeed, you approach men with desire, instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people."
But the answer of his people was only that they said, "Evict them from your city! Indeed, they are men who keep themselves pure."
So We saved him and his family, except for his wife; she was of those who remained [with the evildoers].
