Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Wa ṣāḥibatihi" — his wife, his life partner.
  • "Wa akhīhi" — his brother.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On the Day of Judgment, when the terror of that Day becomes overwhelming, every person will be consumed with saving themselves. The disbeliever, in his extreme desperation and horror at the punishment he sees before him, will wish he could offer the most precious things he has as a ransom to escape. Among those he would willingly sacrifice are his wife — the one who shared his life, his joys and sorrows, his intimate companion — and his brother, the one bound to him by blood and kinship. This is the depth of the selfishness and fear that will seize him on that Day; he will offer even his closest relatives to be saved from Allah's punishment.

This verse paints a vivid picture of the severity of that Day, when all worldly bonds of love and loyalty dissolve in the face of divine justice. It serves as a powerful reminder that no relationship, no matter how dear, can shield a person from the consequences of their deeds. The ties that people rely upon in this world — family, friendship, status — will be utterly useless before Allah's judgment.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this scene with a heart that seeks guidance. If on that Day a person is willing to give up his wife and brother to save himself, what does that tell us about the reality of this life? It tells us that the only thing that truly matters is our relationship with Allah — our faith, our deeds, and our sincerity. The Qur'an invites us to build our lives on a foundation that will not crumble on that Day: the foundation of *Tawheed* (monotheism) and righteous action. Do not wait until that Day to realize that nothing can save you except Allah's mercy and your own good deeds. Turn to Him now, while the door of repentance is open, and make your life a preparation for a meeting with your Lord that will be free of regret and fear. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent this warning out of love for you — so that you may not be among those who wish to trade away their dearest ones in vain. Embrace His guidance today, and you will find peace in this world and safety in the next.

📜 Verse 10-14 — Al-Ma'arij

10وَلَا يَسْأَلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا
And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,
11يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ
They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children
12وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخِيهِ
And his wife and his brother
13وَفَصِيلَتِهِ الَّتِي تُؤْوِيهِ
And his nearest kindred who shelter him
14وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ
And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him.
