Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Khayr (الْخَيْر): Wealth, abundance, prosperity, good health, and all forms of worldly blessings and ease.
- Manūʿan (مَنُوعًا): Extremely withholding, miserly, refusing to give what is due — especially the rights of Allah and the needs of others.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah describes the natural state of the human being when left to his own instincts: when hardship and adversity touch him, he is restless and despairing; and when good fortune and prosperity reach him — such as wealth, health, or comfort — he becomes intensely tight-fisted and reluctant to spend in the cause of Allah or to fulfill the rights of others. He clings to what he has, fearing loss, and forgets that it is Allah who granted him these blessings in the first place. This miserliness is not merely a character flaw; it is a spiritual disease that reveals a lack of trust in Allah’s provision and a failure to recognize that wealth is a trust and a test, not an end in itself.
However, this blameworthy trait is not the fate of every person. The verse sets the stage for the exception that follows: those who are devoted to prayer, who are constant in their worship, and who purify their wealth by giving the ordained share to the needy — these are the ones who overcome their base instincts and rise to the rank of true gratitude and righteousness.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on your own heart: when Allah blesses you with abundance, do you become more generous or more guarded? The Qur’an gently awakens us to this reality so that we may purify our souls. Islam does not ask you to give until you are left with nothing; it asks you to recognize that everything you own is a loan from Allah, and that giving is not a loss — it is a gain that multiplies in this world and the next. When you spend for the sake of Allah, you are not losing wealth; you are investing in a treasure that never perishes. Let this verse be a mirror for your soul, and let the love of giving replace the fear of poverty. For Allah has promised: “Whatever you spend in good, He will repay it in full, and He is the Best of Providers” (Saba’ 34:39). Be among those who, when good comes to them, open their hands — not close them — and you will find the doors of divine mercy opened wide before you.
