Meanings of Key Words:
- ʿAṣawnī (عَصَوْنِي): They disobeyed me, rejected my call, and opposed my commands.
- Khasāran (خَسَارًا): Loss, ruin, and destruction — in this world through misguidance, and in the Hereafter through punishment.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound moment, Prophet Nūḥ (peace be upon him) turns to his Lord in complete submission and honesty, laying bare the reality of his people’s response to his long and patient call. He says: "My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me" — meaning they rejected the message of monotheism, refused to worship Allah alone, and persisted in their arrogance and denial despite all his efforts, warnings, and gentle persuasion over centuries.
Then he describes a painful social reality: the weak and the poor among them followed their wealthy and powerful leaders — those who were given abundant wealth and children as a test from Allah, yet these blessings only increased them in loss and ruin. Instead of gratitude and humility, their riches and offspring made them more arrogant, more attached to worldly life, and more resistant to the truth. Their wealth did not benefit them; rather, it became a means of their destruction, for they used it to mock the believers, spread corruption, and strengthen their opposition to the divine call.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every generation: material blessings are not always a sign of divine favor. They can become a trial that leads a person further away from Allah. The one who is truly successful is the one whose heart remains attached to his Creator regardless of his worldly circumstances — whether rich or poor, with children or without.
As a believer, reflect deeply on this: do your blessings draw you closer to Allah or distance you from Him? Do your wealth and family remind you of your responsibility before Allah, or do they make you forget the Hereafter? Let the example of these arrogant leaders be a warning, and let the example of Nūḥ’s unwavering faith be an inspiration. For the believer, every blessing is an opportunity to increase in gratitude and obedience — and that is the path to true success in this life and the next.
