Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Mamdūdan (مَّمْدُودًا): Extended, abundant, and continuously increasing wealth—wealth that is vast, spread out, and ever-growing in its abundance.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is part of a passage addressing the disbeliever who stubbornly opposed the truth—specifically referring to al-Walīd ibn al-Mughīrah, a man who arrogantly rejected the Qur’an and fought against the message of Islam. In this verse, Allah reminds such a person of the favors He bestowed upon him despite his disbelief. Allah says: "And I made for him wealth extended"—meaning, I gave him abundant, expansive riches that kept increasing, from sources such as agriculture, livestock, and trade. This wealth was not a sign of Allah’s pleasure or approval; rather, it was a test and a temporary enjoyment in this worldly life.
The deeper lesson here is profound: material wealth and worldly success are not indicators of divine favor or righteousness. Allah grants provisions to whom He wills—both the believer and the disbeliever—as a test of gratitude and obedience. The one who receives such blessings yet uses them to oppose the truth, to mock revelation, and to wage war against the Messenger of Allah, will face a severe reckoning. Allah, in His perfect justice, will not increase such a person in anything but hardship and punishment in the Hereafter.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this verse and let it awaken your heart. How often do we see people blessed with wealth, health, and status, yet they turn away from their Creator? They think that their abundance is a sign of their own worth, forgetting that the One who gave can also take away. The Qur’an teaches us that true success is not measured by how much we accumulate, but by how we use what we have in obedience to Allah and in service to humanity. If you have been given wealth, let it be a means of drawing closer to Allah—through charity, kindness, and supporting good causes. Do not let it become a veil between you and your Lord. Remember that every blessing is a trust, and you will be asked about it on the Day of Judgment. Turn to Allah now, before it is too late, and let your gratitude be shown through your actions. Indeed, the doors of repentance are open, and Allah’s mercy embraces all who sincerely return to Him.
