Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • حُمُرٌ (Humur): The plural of *himar* (donkey), referring here specifically to wild donkeys.
  • مُسْتَنفِرَةٌ (Mustanfirah): Frightened, fleeing in extreme panic and alarm, as if startled by a pursuer.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse paints a vivid picture of the disbelievers’ attitude toward the Qur’an and its profound admonitions. After describing their turning away from the divine message, Allah likens them to wild donkeys—creatures known for their skittishness and instinctive flight—that are bolting away in sheer terror, as if fleeing from a fierce lion or a hunter’s arrow. Their aversion to the truth is not born of careful reflection or reasoned rejection; rather, it is a blind, instinctive panic. They run from the Qur’an the way a startled beast runs from danger—without pausing to consider what they are fleeing from or why.

This simile exposes the irrationality of their stance. The Qur’an is a source of mercy, guidance, and light, yet they treat it as something to escape. Their hearts are so hardened and their minds so closed that the call to truth feels like a threat, not an invitation. The imagery of wild donkeys also suggests a lack of dignity and composure—they are not noble in their rejection but chaotic and undignified, scattering in every direction.

Da‘wah Reflection:

How tragic it is when a soul flees from its own salvation! The Qur’an is not a burden; it is a healing for what lies in the chests, a lamp for the darkness, and a rope that connects the servant to his Lord. Yet some run from it as if it were a predator, when in truth it is the safest refuge. Dear reader, do not be like those who flee from mercy. Pause, reflect, and open your heart to the words of your Creator. The One who sent this Book knows what is best for you—He is the Most Merciful, the Most Loving. Approach the Qur’an with humility and sincerity, and you will find in it peace that no worldly escape can ever provide. Let not your soul be among the frightened ones; rather, let it be among those who rush toward the light, for that light leads to eternal success.
