Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qaswarah (قَسْوَرَة): This refers to a lion, or according to another interpretation, to hunters/archers. The most widely accepted meaning is a fierce lion.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the powerful simile Allah strikes for those who turn away from the Quran. After describing them as wild donkeys fleeing in panic, Allah says: "They have fled from a lion" — meaning, they run away in terror from the truth just as wild donkeys flee for their lives from a predator. The Quran, with its clear proofs, warnings, and guidance, is like a mighty lion that confronts them — and instead of facing it with open hearts and sound minds, they bolt in fear and aversion.

These disbelievers were not fleeing from something obscure or doubtful; they were fleeing from the clearest truth ever revealed to humanity. The Quran calls them to salvation, yet they treat it as if it were a mortal threat. They run from the very words that would bring them peace in this life and eternal success in the Hereafter.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and ask yourself: What is it that you run from? Is it the call to prayer, the words of your Lord, the reminder of death and the Day of Judgment? The wild donkey runs from a lion because the lion will destroy its worldly life — but you, when you turn away from the Quran, are running from the only thing that can save your eternal life. The lion in the simile kills the body, but turning away from the Quran kills the soul.

The Quran is not your enemy — it is your healer, your guide, your light in the darkness of this world. It does not chase you to harm you; it calls you to mercy. So do not be like those who fled in terror from the truth. Instead, be among those who rush towards it, who open their hearts to its verses, who find in it the answer to every confusion and the cure for every ailment. The one who faces the Quran with sincerity will find, not a lion, but a loving companion that leads him to Paradise.
