Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse serves as a profound reminder that human will is never independent or absolute. You may desire goodness, guidance, or a path that leads to Allah’s pleasure—but such a desire only materializes when Allah Himself wills it for you. The entire affair belongs to Him alone; nothing occurs in this universe, whether in the realm of choice or decree, except under His sovereign will and wise plan.
Allah informs us that He is ʿAlīm (All-Knowing)—He knows every detail of His servants’ conditions, their sincerity, their struggles, and what truly benefits them in this life and the next. And He is Ḥakīm (All-Wise)—His will is never arbitrary or unjust; rather, it is rooted in perfect wisdom, whether He grants someone the ability to choose righteousness or leaves them to their own devices as a test.
This verse also carries a beautiful call to humility and reliance on Allah. When you feel the urge to do good, to repent, or to draw closer to Him, recognize that this very urge is a gift from Allah—a sign that He has willed good for you. So cherish that desire, act upon it, and thank Him for opening your heart. And if you find yourself struggling to want what is right, turn to Him in supplication, asking Him to place the love of faith in your heart, for He is the One who turns hearts and directs wills.
For the believers, this verse is a source of hope: Allah’s will is not a barrier but a mercy. He wills for His servants what is good, and He has promised to guide those who sincerely seek Him. For the wrongdoers, it is a warning: their persistence in sin is also within Allah’s knowledge and wisdom, and He has prepared for them a painful punishment as a just consequence of their choices.
So, dear reader, let this verse awaken in you a deep sense of connection to Allah. Your will is not lost—it is honored and guided by His will. Seek His help, trust His wisdom, and strive with sincerity, knowing that the One who knows all and governs all is the Most Merciful and the Most Just.
