Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Meanings:
- Tastaftiḥū (تَسْتَفْتِحُوا): To seek victory or judgment, i.e., to call upon Allah to decide between you and your opponents by granting victory to the rightful side.
- Al-Fatḥ (الْفَتْح): The victory and decisive judgment that came with the Battle of Badr.
- Tantahū (تَنْتَهُوا): To desist and stop—here, meaning to cease disbelief, hostility, and fighting against the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the believers.
- Naʿud (نَعُدْ): We will return—meaning Allah will repeat the same outcome against you.
- Fiʾatukum (فِئَتُكُمْ): Your group, party, or supporters.
- Tughnī (تُغْنِي): To avail or benefit; to protect from harm.
The Interpretation:
O disbelievers, you who called upon Allah to grant victory to the more righteous of the two parties and the better of the two religions—well, your request has been answered! The victory has come, but not in your favor. Allah granted triumph to His Prophet and the believers at Badr, and what befell you there was a severe punishment and a lasting lesson for the God-fearing. So if you now desist from your disbelief, from fighting the Messenger of Allah, and from opposing the truth, that is far better for you in this life and the next—for Allah may grant you respite and open the door to guidance and repentance.
But if you return to hostility and war against the Prophet and his followers, then Allah will return with the same response: defeat and humiliation for you, just as you were defeated at Badr. And be certain that your multitude—your numbers, your wealth, your allies—will never protect you in the least, no matter how great they may be. They could not save you at Badr when you were many and the believers were few, and they will never save you again. Why? Because Allah is with the believers—with His support, His aid, and His divine protection. And whoever has Allah on their side can never be overcome, no matter how small their number or how meager their resources.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a profound and timeless message for every soul: Do not rely on numbers, strength, or worldly power, for these are fleeting and can vanish in an instant. True victory lies only with Allah, and He grants it to those who believe in Him and stand firm upon His path. The disbelievers of Quraysh had every advantage—superior numbers, better equipment, and greater resources—yet they were utterly defeated by a small band of believers whose strength came from their faith. This is a lesson for all of humanity: if you seek success, seek it through obedience to Allah and sincerity to His cause. And if you err and then desist, Allah is ever ready to accept your return—for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving. But if you persist in opposition to the truth, know that no power on earth can shield you from His justice. So choose the path of faith, for in it lies honor in this world and eternal bliss in the Hereafter.
