Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Phrases:

  • Atee'oo (أَطِيعُوا) — Obey, submit, and comply willingly.
  • Wa lā tawallaw (وَلَا تَوَلَّوْا) — Do not turn away, withdraw, or abandon.
  • Wa antum tasma'oon (وَأَنتُمْ تَسْمَعُونَ) — While you are hearing (the verses being recited and the truth being conveyed).

Explanation of the Verse:

O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger — obey Allah and His Messenger in all that they command you to do and all that they forbid you from. Do not turn away from his call, his guidance, or his commands, and do not abandon obedience to him — especially while you are hearing the verses of the Quran being recited to you, and the clear proofs and evidences are reaching your ears. For when you hear the truth and still turn away, your rejection becomes a deliberate act of defiance, not an error of ignorance. The verse calls the believers to a state of constant, conscious submission — a submission that springs from conviction, not compulsion — and warns them against the hypocrisy of hearing the truth yet walking away from it as if they had never heard it at all.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This noble verse is a gentle yet firm reminder from your Lord, dear believer, that faith is not merely a word on the tongue — it is a living reality that moves your heart, guides your actions, and shapes your choices. When you hear the words of Allah, you are standing at the doorstep of divine mercy. Do not close that door by turning away. Every verse you recite, every command you hear, is an invitation from your Creator to draw closer to Him. Imagine the honor: the Lord of the heavens and the earth is speaking to you, guiding you to what is best for you in this life and the next. So respond to His call with a heart full of love and a soul eager to obey. Let your ears be gates of light, not barriers of heedlessness. For the one who listens with sincerity and obeys with devotion has indeed grasped the most firm handhold that never breaks. And know that the sweetness of obedience in this world is but a glimpse of the eternal bliss that awaits those who answered their Lord's call.

📜 Verse 18-22 — Al-Anfal

That [is so], and [also] that Allah will weaken the plot of the disbelievers.
If you [disbelievers] seek the victory - the defeat has come to you. And if you desist [from hostilities], it is best for you; but if you return [to war], We will return, and never will you be availed by your [large] company at all, even if it should increase; and [that is] because Allah is with the believers.
O you who have believed, obey Allah and His Messenger and do not turn from him while you hear [his order].
And do not be like those who say, "We have heard," while they do not hear.
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
