Key Words and Their Meanings:
- ʿAbasa (عَبَسَ): He frowned; his face showed displeasure and a stern, contracted expression.
- Tawallā (تَوَلَّىٰ): He turned away; he averted his face and turned his back.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse opens Surah ʿAbasa with a gentle yet profound admonition directed at the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regarding a specific incident. The Prophet was deeply engaged in a conversation with a group of influential leaders of the Quraysh, hoping to guide them toward Islam and soften their hearts to the message of monotheism. His focus was on the potential impact their conversion could have on the wider community.
At that very moment, a blind companion, ʿAbdullāh ibn Umm Maktūm (may Allah be pleased with him), approached the Prophet seeking knowledge and guidance. He was unaware of the ongoing discussion and interrupted, saying, "O Messenger of Allah, teach me from what Allah has taught you." The Prophet, being preoccupied with the leaders and perhaps finding the interruption untimely, frowned and turned away from the blind man to continue his conversation.
The verse records this human moment with divine precision: "He frowned and turned away." It does not condemn the Prophet harshly, but it gently corrects him, teaching a timeless lesson about the true measure of a person’s worth in the sight of Allah — not by their social status, wealth, or influence, but by their sincerity and their eagerness to learn the truth. The blind man’s heart was pure and seeking, while the wealthy leaders were arrogant and reluctant. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, used this moment to elevate the status of the humble seeker and to teach the Ummah that no one should be neglected in favor of the powerful.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful lesson in humility, compassion, and the ethics of daʿwah (calling to Allah). It reminds every believer — from the scholar to the layperson — that the seeker of knowledge, no matter how poor, disabled, or socially insignificant they may appear, deserves the utmost respect and attention. Islam is a religion of mercy and justice; it does not favor the rich over the poor, nor the strong over the weak. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was later so affected by this divine correction that he would honor ʿAbdullāh ibn Umm Maktūm, greet him warmly, and ask him about his needs whenever he came to him.
This verse also reassures us that Allah’s love and guidance are accessible to all who sincerely seek them. No one is turned away from His door. So, let us be like the blind companion — eager, humble, and persistent in seeking knowledge — and let us be like the Prophet in his final conduct — respectful, kind, and attentive to every soul that comes to us seeking the light of faith. For in the sight of Allah, the most honored among you is the one who is most righteous (Qur'an 49:13).
