Surah 'Abasa — Verse 20

Word Meanings:

• Al-Sabeel (السَّبِيل): The path or way — referring here to the path of guidance and truth, or the path of good and evil.
• Yassarahu (يَسَّرَهُ): He made it easy, facilitated it, or clarified it.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After mentioning the stages of human creation — from a drop of fluid, through clinging clot, then a lump of flesh, and onward through the stages of development — Allah now tells us that He then made the path easy for this human being. This means He clarified and facilitated the way of guidance and misguidance, the path of good and evil, and made it accessible for every person to choose their course. He did not leave humanity in darkness; rather, He sent messengers, revealed scriptures, and instilled within every soul the innate ability to distinguish right from wrong. The path to success was made smooth and clear, and the path to failure was also made evident, so that no one could claim ignorance on the Day of Judgment.

Some scholars also interpret this verse as referring to the ease of the baby's exit from the mother's womb, following the stages of creation mentioned in the preceding verses. Both meanings are valid and complementary: Allah facilitated both the physical journey of birth and the spiritual journey of life.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How immense is the mercy of our Lord! He did not merely create us and leave us to wander aimlessly. He paved the road for us, lit it with the light of revelation, and placed within our hearts the compass of fitrah (natural disposition toward truth). When you realize that the same Allah who carefully formed you in the darkness of the womb is the One who has shown you the way to Paradise, your heart fills with gratitude and love. He made the path easy — so do not make it difficult for yourself by turning away from His guidance. The road is open, the signs are clear, and the destination is eternal bliss. Will you not take that first step today?
