Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Nutfah (نُّطْفَةٍ): A small amount of fluid — specifically, the seminal drop from which human life begins. It signifies something tiny, weak, and seemingly insignificant.
  • Qaddarahu (قَدَّرَهُ): He proportioned, measured, and determined his stages — giving each phase of creation a precise, ordained sequence.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the powerful reminder of humanity’s humble origin, addressing the arrogant disbeliever who denies the Hereafter. Allah asks: "From what did He create him?" The answer comes: "From a drop of fluid He created him, then proportioned him."

Reflect deeply on this: the entire majestic human being — with intellect, emotions, and a soul — begins as a single, almost invisible drop. Yet Allah, the All-Wise, does not leave it to chance. He *qaddarahu* — He meticulously designed every stage of development: from the drop (nutfah), to a clinging clot (alaqah), then a lump of flesh (mudghah), then bones, then flesh, then the breathing of the soul. Every limb, every organ, every feature — from the color of your eyes to the lines on your fingertips — was measured and ordained with perfect precision.

This is not a random accident of nature. It is the deliberate, loving craftsmanship of the Creator. The same Allah who formed you in the womb with such care is fully capable of bringing you back to life after death. So why do we doubt His power? Why do we turn away from His commands?

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, look at your own hands — the very hands that hold this page. Trace their intricate design. Remember that they were once nothing but a humble drop. If Allah could transform that drop into the miracle you are today, then surely He can resurrect you for the Day of Judgment. This verse is an invitation to humility: never be arrogant, never feel self-sufficient, for your beginning was weak and your end is in His hands.

Let this realization fill your heart with gratitude. Thank Allah for His perfect design, and let that gratitude translate into obedience. For the One who perfected your creation deserves nothing less than your complete submission. Embrace Islam with a humble heart, for it is the path that aligns your life with the very purpose for which you were so beautifully and precisely created.

Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.
From what substance did He create him?
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;
Then He eased the way for him;
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.
