Word Meanings:
- الصَّاخَّة (As-Sākhkhah): The Deafening Blast/Cry. It is derived from the root "صَخَّ" (sakhkha), which means to deafen or to pierce the ears with an overwhelming sound. It refers to the second blowing of the Trumpet (Sur) that raises the dead for the Day of Judgment.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the Deafening Blast comes—the mighty cry of the Day of Resurrection that pierces the ears and overwhelms all senses—that is the second trumpet blow that will raise all of humanity from their graves. It is called "As-Sākhkhah" because it deafens the ears with its sheer terror and intensity; no sound has ever been or will ever be like it. This is the moment when the present world and all its concerns come to a sudden end, and the eternal reality of the Hereafter begins.
On that day, every person will be consumed by their own overwhelming terror and preoccupation. The bonds of kinship, love, and friendship will be severed in the face of that immense horror. A man will flee from his own brother, his mother, his father, his wife, and his children—not out of hatred, but because each soul will be entirely absorbed in its own fate. As the Quran describes, "For every man, that Day, will be a matter sufficient to make him heedless of others" (80:37).
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is not merely a description of a distant future event—it is a wake-up call for the heart. The Deafening Blast is certain; it will come, whether we prepare for it or not. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, has warned us in advance so that we may turn back to Him before that Day when no plea or intercession will avail us without His permission.
Imagine standing before your Lord, with every deed—small and great—laid bare. How sweet will it be for the believer who spent their life in obedience, prayer, charity, and remembrance of Allah? How heavy will it be for the one who neglected their duties and chased the fleeting pleasures of this world?
Let this verse stir you to action. The Prophet ﷺ said, "The wise person is the one who holds himself accountable and works for what comes after death" (Tirmidhi). So, before the Deafening Blast arrives, let your ears be deafened by the beautiful recitation of the Quran, your heart be softened by remembrance of Allah, and your limbs be engaged in good deeds. For on that Day, the only thing that will matter is your relationship with your Creator—and that is something you can build right now, in this very moment. Do not delay, for the Hour is nearer than you think.
