Explanation of the Verse:
On that tremendous Day—the Day of Resurrection—when the piercing blast of the Trumpet strikes terror into every heart, a person will flee from his own brother. This is not out of hatred or enmity, but purely out of the overwhelming fear and horror of that moment. The bonds of kinship, which are among the strongest in this worldly life, will be severed by sheer panic. A brother, who would normally be the first to defend and support his sibling, will run away in desperation, seeking only his own safety.
This flight is not limited to brothers alone; as the following verses clarify, a person will also flee from his mother, his father, his wife, and his children. The reason is that on that Day, every soul will be consumed by its own affairs, its own reckoning, and its own fate. The Quran describes this state in another verse: "Every man that Day will have enough to make him careless of others" (80:37). Each person will be so absorbed in the weight of their own deeds and the question of their own salvation that they will have no capacity to attend to anyone else, no matter how close or beloved.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the solitude of that Day—a day when no relative, no friend, and no companion can avail another. It strips away all illusions of worldly support and forces the soul to confront its own reality before its Creator.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, imagine a day when the one who shared your childhood, your joys, and your sorrows—your own brother—will turn away from you in fear. Imagine that the love you relied upon becomes useless in that moment. This is not to frighten you without purpose, but to awaken your heart to the truth: the only One who will be with you on that Day is the One who created you, and His mercy is attained through faith and righteous deeds in this life.
So, let this verse inspire you to strengthen your relationship with Allah today. Seek His forgiveness, perform your prayers, give charity, and treat others with kindness. For on the Day when all else fails, your good deeds will be your true companions. Do not wait until that Day to realize what truly matters—turn to your Lord now, and He will be your protector and guide both in this world and the next.
