Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Matā'an (مَّتَاعًا): A provision, benefit, or enjoyment — something that serves as a source of utility and pleasure.
  • An'āmikum (أَنْعَامِكُمْ): Your livestock — including camels, cattle, sheep, and goats.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this blessed verse, Allah concludes His enumeration of the diverse provisions He has spread across the earth by declaring that all of this — the grains, fruits, gardens, and pastures — is made as a provision and enjoyment for you, O humanity, and for your livestock.

The verse highlights the perfect divine order: Allah does not create anything in vain. The water that pours from the sky, the earth that splits open to yield vegetation, the variety of crops and fruits — all of it serves a purpose. Some of it is directly for human consumption, such as grapes, olives, dates, and grains. Other parts, like the tender grass and herbage, are for the grazing of cattle, camels, and sheep, which in turn provide you with milk, meat, and transport.

This is a profound sign of Allah's mercy and wisdom. He has not only provided for your direct needs but has also arranged a sustainable system where even the "leftovers" of the earth's bounty serve another of His creatures, and that creature serves you in return. It is a cycle of grace that reflects the Creator's infinite care for His creation.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this single verse. When you sit at a table filled with food, when you drink a glass of milk, or when you see a shepherd's flock grazing peacefully — remember that this is not mere coincidence. This is the deliberate, loving arrangement of your Lord. He did not have to provide for you, yet He did — in abundance, in variety, and in perfect balance.

Let this verse awaken gratitude in your heart. The One who provided for you before you were born, who prepared the earth for your arrival, and who continues to sustain you every single day — is He not worthy of your love, your obedience, and your worship?

The enjoyment (matā') mentioned here is not only physical but also a spiritual invitation: to recognize the Provider behind the provision, to thank Him with your tongue, and to use these blessings in ways that please Him. For when you eat with gratitude and live with awareness, even the simplest meal becomes an act of worship. And your livestock, too, are a trust from Allah — treat them kindly, feed them well, and remember that they are part of the signs He has placed around you to draw you closer to Him.

So let this verse be a reminder every time you eat, drink, or witness the bounty of nature: "This is for me, and for my animals — a gift from the Most Merciful." And let that awareness transform your heart into one that is constantly thankful, constantly mindful, and constantly turning to its Creator.

And gardens of dense shrubbery

[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.
33فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ
But when there comes the Deafening Blast

On the Day a man will flee from his brother
